Clara sits in the living room with her parents and Nini and she tells the honest truth.
"I didn't try to steal your cat, that's CRAZY talk!" she says. Seriously, who tries to steal a cat?
Clara's mom has a high tolerance for batty women and she knows that Nini has some paranoia issues, so she smiles indulgently at her daughter. "Oh Clara, it does sound silly doesn't it? Your father and I just want you to come clean no matter what."
"But I MEAN it Mommy, I wouldn't try to steal a CAT, that makes no SENSE! What would I do with it?"
Her dad scrutinizes her angelic face and decides that she's telling the truth. No one could fake that shrill impertinence.
"I saw her! I saw the way she was looking at my kitty! Them's were thieves' eyes, I tells ye!" Nini shrieks.
"Now now Nini," Clara's dad says to the hysterical old bag, "I think it's time for you to go home and take a nap."
Nini totters off, mumbling to herself, leaving the family in the living room.
"You're a good girl, Clara," the mom says. "We will always believe you're a good girl. So if you ever do something wrong, don't ever feel bad about telling us."
"But I didn't DO anything!"
"Not this time, no," says dad, "but we mean in the future."
