As he moves ponderously towards the elevator, Percy says, “I’m really into eating, myself.” Matt thinks to himself, ‘That’s appropriate,’ then Percy goes on. “I’m captain of the OSB eating team this year, and I want us to get to the Nationals!”
“Eating team?” asks Matt, puzzled. “But eating’s not a sport!”
“Oh yes it is!” replies Percy with a chuckle, rubbing his massive gut. “After all, we fat guys have to have some sport we’re naturally good at!”
“But, I’ve never heard of any competitions.”
“Then you haven’t been paying attention. If you’re looking for them, you’ll see them everywhere. The biggest and best competitions are in New York - Nathan’s hotdog eating competition has gone global!”
“Global?”
“Yeah, the winner the last few years has been this Japanese guy. To make it worse, he’s even skinny - not a sumo or anything. He beat out Badlands Booker and all the rest. As soon as I’m 18, I’m going to Nathan’s and wup his ass!”
“Have you taken part in any competitions?” asks Matt, as Percy’s monster gut gurgles again.
“Oh yeah, I was regional champ last year, and went to the nationals - but this year I want the whole team to go. The school’s working on an international invitational - and we gotta do well, and prove that the best young eaters are right here at OSB!”
“How much can YOU eat?” Matt asks Percy, as they neared the cafeteria.
Percy replies, “That depends on what I’m eating - but I practice every day! Have to keep expanding my capacity, after all.”
