As soon as Matt stepped out into the hallway, he was run into by what seemed to be a moving wall of meat and flab.
“Uuhh,” said Matt, as the stranger stopped.
“Sorry,” said the stranger, who was wearing the biggest pair of nylon gym shorts Matt had ever seen, and an equally vast white tank that loose around the strangers enormous body. “I was running for practice. I’m late. I’m Brad.”
“Hi, Brad, I’m Matt. Practice?”
“Yeah, wrestling practice. It starts in three minutes, and coach gets mad if we’re late. Are you new, what dorm are you in?”
“Dorm 3.”
“Great! That’s where I am. Well, gotta go.”
Brad ran off, the pounding of his heavy footsteps making the old wooden floors groan and shake. Matt stared after him. Brad looked to be about a yard across the shoulders, and the gut that had bowled Matt over was no flat athlete’s gut but a great round sphere, yet Brad had said ‘wrestling practice’. Matt wondered what other sports the school offered, as he made his down the hall to the stairs. You’d think a school that called itself “Obesity School for Boys” would at least have elevators, but the stairs loomed ahead.
As he got close to the stairs he passed a lighted display case, with a series of trophies inside. He read inscriptions on trophies for wrestling, weightlifting, swimming, football, and a brand new plaque for sumo wrestling. A series of tartan ribbons surrounded a certificate for junior Scottish heavyweight events. He also saw a house cup for eating, and a series of individual cups for various eating competitions, along with a cup for the ‘best cannonball’. Just past the display case, at the foot of the stairs, was a poster of a hugely fat wrestler with the caption ‘Think Big!’. “Wow,” thought Matt, “this is all stuff fat guys can do. I wonder what gym class looks like.” He began to lumber up the stairs with his bags, feeling sore in his shoulders from the weight of them them, when a great, dark skinned figure loomed above him from the second floor landing.
“Hi there, are you Matt?” the figure said. “I’m Percy, the prefect in Dorm 3, and...
