Chapter #1

Lets get this party started!

As I approached Lexy’s house, the evening air was thick with laughter and music. The place was lit with strings of lights, casting a warm glow over the front yard, where a few guests were mingling, drinks in hand. I could hear the faint echo of Josh's laughter from inside—Lexy's brother had always been the life of the party, and tonight was no exception. It was his 29th birthday, and Lexy had pulled out all the stops to make it a night to remember.

I adjusted my collar and took a deep breath before entering the open front door. The familiar scent of home-cooked food hit me immediately—something spicy and rich that made my stomach growl. Lexy’s family must have been cooking all day, knowing how much she loved to impress at family gatherings. As I stepped inside, I was greeted by a bustling living room filled with people I knew well and a few new faces I didn’t recognize.

Lexy instantly spotted me, her face lighting up as she hurried over. "Nic! You made it!" she exclaimed, wrapping me warmly. Her long, dark hair brushed against my cheek as she pulled away, her smile as bright as ever.

"Wouldn’t miss it for the world," I replied, returning her smile. "Josh's birthday only comes once a year, after all."

She laughed, making a sound that eased the tension in my shoulders. "Well, grab a drink and get comfortable. We’ve got a full night ahead of us—drinks, games, and maybe even some dancing if I can convince enough people."

I chuckled, nodding as I made my way toward the kitchen. On my way, I passed a few familiar faces—Maria Vargas, one of our coworkers, was chatting animatedly with Javier Reyes, who was trying his best to keep up with her fast-paced conversation. Javier caught my eye and gave me a quick nod of acknowledgment before turning back to Maria, who seemed oblivious that she was dominating the conversation.

In the kitchen, I found the source of the delicious smell—Kristella, Lexy's mom, was overseeing a pot on the stove while Ruben, her stepdad, was pouring drinks. They greeted me warmly, and I exchanged a few pleasantries with them before grabbing a beer and heading back into the living room.

As the evening wore on, the party began to pick up pace. More guests arrived, the music got louder, and the laughter became boisterous. I found myself moving from group to group, chatting with old friends, and making small talk with those I didn’t know as well. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, genuinely celebrating Josh's birthday.

At some point, we gathered around the dining table for a round of drinking games. Josh, always the competitive one, insisted on starting with a classic—beer pong. Teams were quickly formed, and I paired with Lexy against Josh and Javier. The game was intense, with each side determined to outdo the other. Despite her small stature, Lexy had a surprisingly good aim, and we quickly took the lead.

The room was filled with cheers and jeers as the game progressed, the competitive spirit infectious. I could feel the alcohol starting to take effect, making everything seem a bit hazier and the laughter a bit louder. By the time the game ended, with Lexy and I declaring the winners, I felt the warm buzz of alcohol and the contentment of being surrounded by good friends.

We moved on to other games, each one more ridiculous than the last, until we finally settled back into the living room, some of us sprawled out on the couches, others on the floor. The conversation flowed easily, punctuated by laughter as stories from the past were shared. It felt like one of those perfect nights you never want to end.

And then, as if on cue, the atmosphere shifted.

It was subtle at first—a slight dimming of the lights, a drop in the volume of the music. I glanced around, expecting to see someone fiddling with the controls, but everyone seemed oblivious. Lexy was laughing at something Josh had said, her head thrown back, unaware of the change. I felt a chill run down my spine, a sudden sense of unease that I couldn’t quite place.

And then, the room froze.

It wasn’t like in the movies, where everything stops suddenly with a loud crash. No, this was more gradual, like the world was slowly winding down. The laughter faded into silence, and my friends’ movements slowed until they were all perfectly still, caught in mid-action. Lexy’s smile was frozen, her hand halfway to her drink. Javier was paused mid-sentence, his mouth open in a word that would never be spoken.

Panic surged through me, but a figure stepped out from the room’s shadows before I could react. He was tall, dressed in a dark suit that seemed to absorb the light around him, his face obscured by the shadows. He moved with fluid grace, his footsteps silent on the carpeted floor.

"Who—" I started, but the words caught in my throat as he raised a hand, silencing me with a mere gesture.

"Nic," he said, his voice low and smooth, with an accent I couldn’t quite place. "I’ve been watching you. Tonight is a special night, and I’ve decided to gift you something… unique."

I tried to speak again, but my voice seemed deserted. All I could do was stare at this mysterious figure as he continued.

"You now have the power to change the lives of those around you, to shift their identities. All it takes is a thought; those you choose will enter a trance. They will swap in whatever way you choose and assume each other’s roles. When they unfreeze, they will be entirely transformed, with only you knowing what happened."

My mind was racing, trying to comprehend what he was saying. This had to be a dream, some alcohol-induced hallucination. But everything felt too real—the chill in the air, the heaviness of his words, the eerie stillness of the room.

"Why… me?" I finally managed to choke out.

The figure tilted his head slightly as if considering the question. "Because, Nic, you have always been an observer, right? Watching, waiting, wondering what it would be like to change the world around you. Now, you have that chance."

Before I could respond, he stepped back into the shadows, his form fading into the darkness. The room seemed to pulse around me, and then, in an instant, everything snapped back into motion. The lights brightened, the music returned to its previous volume, and my friends continued their conversations as if nothing had happened.

But I knew something had changed. The power I now held was real, and with it came a responsibility—and a temptation—that I had never imagined.

I glanced around the room, my heart pounding in my chest. I could choose anyone. I could change everything. But who would I start with? How should they swap?

The possibilities were endless, and the night had only just begun.

You have the following choices:
