Chapter #3

Into Town

by: Unaccustomed Cucumber Author IconMail Icon
You decide to follow the sidewalk, avoiding the chaos of Walmart for now. It’s a risk, sure, but at least here, you can move more freely without the looming threat of an enormous fly or some random foot crushing you at every step. Plus, the sidewalk seems like a more direct route to the heart of town. You’re small, but you’re clever—and that might just be enough to keep you alive.

You inch your way forward, staying close to the edge of the sidewalk, where the grass and shrubs offer a little more cover. Every step feels like a huge leap to you, but you push through the discomfort, focusing on your goal: get to town, find shelter, and, if possible, gather some supplies.

The first major hurdle comes almost immediately. A couple walks by, their feet sounding like thunder in the distance. You freeze, heart racing, as their shoes approach. You can’t afford to be spotted. You scramble into the nearest crack in the sidewalk, praying they don’t notice the tiny movement. The gap between the slabs is just big enough for you to wedge yourself in, but it’s a tight squeeze. You hold your breath, feeling the tremors in the air as their footsteps grow louder and then fade away.

After a few minutes of tense silence, you exhale and continue forward, but now with extra caution. Your nerves are on edge. The smallest disturbance could end your quest in an instant.

You pass a few storefronts on the way, each feeling like a vast, distant world. One of them—a coffee shop—has a couple of giant chairs outside, and you can't help but stare at the enormous metal straws and paper cups littering the area. What would you give to be able to drink even a sip of coffee, let alone something much more substantial? But you keep moving, eyes scanning for any points of interest.

You can also see a spa and a fast-food restaurant further up ahead, however, the foot traffic only gets denser the deeper into town you get...

You have the following choices:

*Noteb*
1. Go back to the coffee shop

*Noteb*
2. Sneak into the spa

*Noteb*
3. Go to the restaurant

*Noteb*
4. Keep going deeper into town

*Noteb* indicates the next chapter needs to be written.
