“Wow, what a morning! That squirrel sure was sneaky.” Brie said between mouthfuls of waffle. She grabbed the bottle of maple syrup and added a healthy pour to her already syrupy plate.
Hillary sighed “I don't know how it got into the house. We'll have to be more careful about closing windows from now on.”
“And maybe also not giving squirrels a reason to come inside.” Tina teased, looking pointedly at Brie.
Brie smiled innocently and took another bite. “Aren’t you glad we’re eating waffles though?”
Her sister smiled and nodded. It was much better than that sad sandwich, which ended up as dog food. Speaking of the dog, Maxie was patiently waiting underneath the table hoping to grab some more crumbs from the kids. His patience would soon pay off.
Hillary sat down with her own plate of waffles. Squeezing some honey onto hers, she addressed the girls, “Before I forget, I wanted to discuss something with you two…”
Brie was only half listening. Inspired by the morning’s events, she was trying to convince Maxie to assist her in another ticklish situation. This one involved her flicking pieces of waffle at her mother’s toes.
The first piece sailed past Hillary’s outstretched feet. "Oops, missed!" Maxie quickly scooped it up.
She tried again but the waffle chunk bounced off Hillary's big toe. "Almost!" Another snack for Maxie.
Hillary stopped mid sentence and frowned. "What is happening down there?"
Undeterred, Brie took careful aim and launched the last bit. It landed directly between her mom’s unsuspecting toes. "Bullseye!"
Before Hillary could react, Maxie noticed the tasty morsel. He lunged forward and diligently started licking between her toes to clean it off.
"Ah! Maxie no!" Hillary shrieked as his rough tongue scraped her ultra sensitive skin. She burst into giggles, scrunching her toes up but unable to escape Maxie’s attack. Brie burst into uncontrollable laughter at the success of her plan.
Tina watched her mom sympathetically having gone through something similar moments earlier, but couldn’t deny how entertaining the spectacle was. Eventually, she climbed under the table with one of his favorite dolls to corral the playful dog towards more appropriate activities.
“My gosh! First squirrels, now this rascal!” Hillary laughed. “Now what was I saying? Oh right, it’s been forever since we’ve done this so I thought we could plan a family vacation."
Brie perked up immediately. "A vacation? Yeeeesssss!!!"
Tina, who was still sitting on the floor with Maxie, looked interested but was trying to play it cool. "Oh yeah! Where would we go?"
Hillary smiled at her daughters’ enthusiasm. “Well, I was thinking about some of the possibilities. We could relax at the beach, go camping in a national park, maybe visit some new cities.”
"Let’s go camping!” Brie exclaimed, “Imagine going through a huge park, looking up at the stars, seeing waterfalls, mountains.”
“Okay okay, what about you, Tina?”
“Uhm… I think it would be really cool to go to a new city like Paris or Tokyo. Someplace totally different from where we are now.”
“Paris sounds fun!” Brie chimed in. “Or Amsterdam, or Seoul!”
“No one wants to go to a tropical island?” Hillary asked dreamily. "Sandy beaches, swimming in the cool water, a relaxing paradise?"
“What if we did a cruise?” Tina asked, “Then we could incorporate a bit of everything?”
“Yeah a cruise!” Brie yelled standing up from her chair. It seemed she was excited about any kind of trip. The three of them discussed a little while before deciding on…
