...go to a daycare

“…go to the new child daycare in Apple Street,” her mother explained matter-of-factly.

Nathalie scoffed again in contempt, thought the whole thing was a joke, and groaned sarcastically, “Yeah, sure… as if, ha.”

But her mother remained deadly serious. “No, seriously now, Nathalie. I recently ran into one of the staff members from there while shopping and got to talking with her. She said that, since the facility is still new, they still have a lot of open spots and aren’t picky. In principle, they’ll take anyone, no matter the age…”

“Mom…” Nathalie wanted to interrupt, suddenly not so sure anymore whether her mother was really joking—but her mother wasn’t done yet and continued speaking unfazed.

“I actually originally inquired about Kate… but after the way you acted earlier…”

“Mom… seriously?!” Nathalie was visibly starting to panic. Either her mother was an excellent actress trying to scare her a little… or this was already a done deal.

“I just called them again and asked once more if it would really be possible to drop you off there this evening… and yes… they’d really do it. I’m taking you there tonight, and tomorrow afternoon I’ll come back—depending on how you behave, I’ll either take you home, or you’ll stay there for another day… or—” she paused briefly, “...maybe you’ll even like it there so much that you won’t want to leave at all. Then of course you could stay.”

For the first time, her mother’s previously dead-serious expression softened a bit, and she even chuckled. “Who knows… maybe you can even turn this punishment into something positive for yourself.”

“Mom, this is bullshit!” Nathalie burst out.

But her mother just shook her head.

“No, no, everything is already decided. And I’ve already packed most of your stuff too, we just have to…”
