The closest government office to my house was the DMV downtown. I don't think I'd ever driven to the DMV this early in the morning, but it was an interesting day driving into downtown. Things were quieter, like people had just disappeared, and I couldn't tell if it was because it was just early, or if that many people were in a similar situation to me...
Finally making my way into the DMV, there's a wearing military fatigues standing at the door, she looks to me and says, "You here for because of the governors message?"
"Uhhh...yes?" I stop, not familiar with the voice that came out, the woman seems to understand, "With that reaction, and the sloppy way you just walked up here, I could tell. Here. Head right in sweetie." She says opening the door for me.
Slightly scared of my own voice right now I softly reply, "Thank you." Walking inside to see the strangest DMV I had ever seen.
People were being interviewed by government employees along the benches where people usually had to wait. Past all of them, there were several photo booths set up, and beyond that, I could've swore that I saw clothes racks, but before I could investigate further, one of the government officers came up to me. This one was a man, maybe in his mid twenties, couldn't have been older than me. He approached and asked, "Ma'am? If you'd please follow me."
I nod my head and follow him to the benches, where he asks for my ID. I produce it, handing it to him to which he looks at me, then back at the card, then back at me. I can sense his confusion, so I defensively say, "I promise that's me. Well, me from yesterday...can you tell me what's going on?"
"Soon...ma'am," he said, seeming unsure of how to refer to me, "We just need to confirm that you are who you are and that...this is really you..." He begins to ask me some questions about my life. Where I grew up, what my parents names were, things like that. He asks me to recount the last day and I tell him, making sure to mention how I just wqoke up like this, how nothing was out of the ordinary and then BOOM! Suddenly I was a woman! He nods at me as I speak, barely reacting until I finish, at which point he hands off my ID to another worker.
"Craig there is going to verify your info and confirm your story," he says looking back to me, looking for too long, I realize he's staring at my new, sizeable chest. Embarrassed, I lean back trying to obscure his view of the globes, blushing. He snaps back to it and says, "uhhh...right! Craig will verify your information and then, if all checks out, we'll set you up with new papers."
"New papers? What do you mean? Can you PLEASE just tell me what is going on?" I say a bit louder than intended, I shrink a bit in my seat after I realize. The man just looks at me, then softly replies, "It's OK. I understand your...eagerness to know more. While we wait, I suppose it wouldn't hurt if I told you."
"To tell you the truth," the man said in a hush tone leaning in a bit towards me, "we have no idea what's going on. Government's keeping everything real quiet, all we know is that we were called in at an ungodly hour of the night, boss telling us we needed to report to our nearest office to help out with the crisis. Next thing ya know, I'm here, taking in people who say they've woken up in new bodies...I didn't believe it at first, until..." his voice seemed to trial off as he finished that sentence.
"Until?" I asked somberly.
"Until my girlfriend showed up...in a man's body...her new body." He said with heavy shoulders.
"Oh...I...I'm sorry. Guessing it's not gonna work out?"
"No. Bryan, said he's not interested in me anymore...go figure." As he said this, the other officer, Craig, came back, with papers he handed to the man. "Welp, looks like your all set, everything checked out, follow me." He said, unfazed, standing up, and headed towards the photo booths.
I followed him, feeling a bit more relaxed, the story really putting things into perspective for me. So many people. SO. MANY. PEOPLE. Had their lives torn apart because of whatever was happening. I could only hope that something could be done for everyone. Just praying something good comes out of all this.
He led me over, and the man instructed me, "Take a seat." Gesturing to the photo booth.
I took a seat, as I did he suddenly declared to me, "Consider yourself lucky. MY girlfr...ex-girlfirend, got turned into a guy. Not a handsome one at that. You on the other hand, you're the ugly guy who got lucky with a babe's bod. Hope you enjoy it."
As he said this, I couldn't help but feel a little guilty. He had a point. I was a nobody. Before this, this Great Shift, I was nothing exceptional, especially regarding my appearance. But now, now I was gorgeous. I had been a woman for 2 hours, and I had already noticed someone staring at me. I really did get lucky, and as I pondered this thought, the man snapped my picture, perfectly in line with DMV standards.
The man asked me to stand, instructing me to head further into the back, telling me, "They're gonna take a physical of you, and set you up with instructions for what to do next. Good luck." He said turning to head back to the front offices.
I quickly stopped him, demanding him to halt, "Wait! I-" was still not used to this voice, but I try my best to speak with the right inflections, "I-want to thank you for...well everything. What's your name?"
"Derrick."
"Derrick...Well thank you Derrick, and good luck with...everything..." I say walking into the back room.
