“So, how’d this happy accident happen?” You asked, playfully nudging his shoulder. Aiden already seemed stressed out enough, you figured. Maybe you could get him talking, to take the edge off.
Aiden blushed again, looking down at the table. “Well… A few days ago, Grace asked me if I was interested in testing out some rides and stuff for a new Tiny-Only area of the Oasis. I was sure that Mom would say no- she always does. But this time, maybe because she knew that the new area was supposed to be sectioned off from the public, maybe because she trusted Selena would be able to keep an eye on things, she let it happen.” He grinned. “I couldn’t believe it! She was finally trusting me!”
“Yeah, it’s… real progress.” You nodded, hiding your wince as you remembered the long phone call from Jenna, and you and Piper talking her down from going along with Aiden.
“So, we went in, and tried out the new stuff, which was sick. But when we were getting lunch in the food court, I noticed this… shadow over me, and I remember Grace trying to get me up, but I guess we weren’t fast enough, ‘cause… we got sat on.”
You failed to hide your wince, this time. “I take it Jenna didn’t hear about that part?”
Aiden shook his head. “Are you crazy? She’d never let me leave the house again!” He sighed. “It’s not like it was a big deal. We were only stuck for a few minutes, and Grace’s locator badge meant Selena found us pretty quickly. And that’s when we started talking.”
“We being you and the girl who sat on you?” You couldn’t help but shake your head, chuckling. “It’s starting to seem like a tradition for Jacobs men to meet their girlfriends ass-first.”
Aiden laughed at that, already seeming more relaxed. “I guess so. I… Thanks, Uncle Matt.”
You nod. “Anytime, kid. Knock ‘em dead!” With Aiden looking reinvigorated, you head up to affected seating area, near the rafters, and order a coffee, sitting at a table overhead of Aiden’s with a clear view.
At that moment, the door to the coffee shop opened, and in stepped…
1: Hope, the overly flirty lifeguard who has a massive unrequited crush on you. As she greets Aiden and approaches, she seems genuine enough, but you’re still unconvinced that this isn’t some convoluted ploy to get closer to you somehow.
2: Kenzie, the lazily apathetic lifeguard. In all of your unfortunate run-ins with her, you’ve never known her to express any outward emotion other than bored disinterest, so what exactly motivated her to undertake as significant an action as to go on a date? Could Aiden have somehow broken through her shell? Judging from her expression’s usual bored look, you doubted it.
3: Yesenia, the athletic lifeguard. While you hadn’t had many run-ins with Yesenia, the few times you’d crossed paths with her had been when she’d rescued you from one of her co-workers. She definitely seemed the most focused on Tiny safety, at least when she was at work. For some reason, though, she seemed almost… apprehensive?
4: Mei, the student lifeguard. A foreign exchange student at Weston from Beijing, Mei’s bubbly personality was matched only by the bubbliness of her butt. Due to China’s views on, and lack of, free Tinies, Mei never had to keep an eye on her surroundings for them, which translated into a lot of accidents Stateside. She looks excited for the date, but you have no idea if she shares her culture’s values when it comes to Tinies.
5: Not one of the lifeguards, and someone you didn’t recognize. Her smile at Aiden looked kind, though. As she approached, you noticed cochlear implant transmitters on both sides of her head… (RESERVED)
