Chapter #7

Art skills of a child

    by: Morphology Author IconMail Icon
Giving the remote to Jenn, he instructed her to copy over the artistic skills of the father drawing on the tablet. Turning her head to see what he was talking about, Jenn could see the man that he was talking about. He had put down his tablet and was working to get his daughter, who looked to be around 5 or so, to sit down in her seat to finish eating her food. Nodding her head, Jenn took the remote from her boyfriend's hands and aimed it over at the guy that he was talking about. Taking great care to scan the guy, she pressed the button, but just as she did he had ducked to pick something off of the ground that his daughter had dropped and Jenn didn't know if she'd done it correctly.

"What are you waiting for?" Josh asked wanting his turn to learn something new.

Attempting to get the remote from her hands, Josh started to get up and go over to her. "But I think I miss..." Jenn started but was soon cut off.

"Have you two thought of what you wanted to tonight?" The waitress asked causing Josh to sit back down.

"Yeah, I would like to have the Taco Salad with Chicken, please." Jenn told her as she instinctively put the remote out of her sight by putting it in her pullover.

The waitress glanced over to Josh, who seemed to be flustered about something. "Uhh..." He started and looked back down at the menu. "I will have the Taco and Enchilada Platter." Josh replied back to her. Nodding her head, the waitress went to the back to input the order so that the cooks could start on it.

As she left, Josh looked back over to Jenn, who was starting to get the remote out once more. "Fine here." She told him while pointing the remote to him and pressing the paste button.

Josh closed his eyes just before she hit the button in anticipation for the bright light. It didn't seem to help very much as he still couldn't see very well after the remote did it's job. He started to look around for something to start doodling with and realized that he had left his backpack in his car. Turning to his girlfriend, who seemed anxious about something, Josh gestured to her bag that she usually brought with her everywhere they went. "Do you have anything to doodle with in there?" He asked, hoping to see what he could do.

"I... I think I do." Jenn stuttered looking through her bag and pulled out some notebook paper and a couple of colored pens along with a mechanical pencil. Sheepishly, she gave it to him to see if she was correct with the remote earlier.

Thinking about what he was going to sketch, it he took a good long look at her and then looked back down at the piece of paper. Letting his new skills do the work, Josh let his new skills do all the work. As he drew, he seemed to be more engrossed into the work and didn't worry too much at how it looked. He assumed that the man made a living on drawing, or at the very least did it for a side hustle, and Josh didn't know what kind of art that he usually did. So when he was done and looked down at the simplified drawing of a stick figured woman  Open in new Window. that looked to be chasing something. "What in the hell?" He cursed under his breath looking back over at Jenn who seemed to be fighting back tears from embarrassment.

"Like I was trying to tell you." Jenn told him with a hushed voice. "I think I accidentally hit the girl when I fired the remote." She then told of how the girl seemed to have fallen when the remote was fired. "I'm sorry." She apologized.

Looking down at the sheet of paper with the crudely drawn picture of a woman staring back at him. "It's alright." Josh told her with a small wave of his hand. "I mean, I'm not planning on becoming an art major or anything like that." Curious about how much had changed, Josh decided to take some of the colored pens and started to color the picture he drew. With each movement of the pen, he tried his best to stay in the lines, but each time he would try to slow down at the edge his hand would tend to shake causing him to color outside the lines.

"That is so cute." Josh heard from beside him. Looking up, he could see that the waitress had come over. Seeing that she may have said something that she didn't mean to, Zoe (based on her name tag) cleared her throat. "Sorry, but have you guys thought about what you would like today?"

Without skipping a beat, Jenn turned to her. "I think I will go with the grilled taco salad today." She gave the menu back to the waitress.

"Excellent and you?" She asked looking over at Josh who had gone back to work on his picture. He had to add some other touches like a sun and some trees, all looked as childish as the stick figures that was at the center of the paper.

Feeling Jenn touching his hand to get his attention, Josh broke his concentration and brought his gaze towards the waitress. "Sorry. I will have the ____________."
