Chapter #5

There was a short queue of candidates he had to...

Larry's heart rate started to speed, as he found himself having to mingle with five other candidates, before entering the arena. His discomfort with the lower orders, gradually shifting to the realisation that this would make his idea of things being done for show, without risk was vanishingly small.

With a bell announcing the opening of the ceremony, the door sliding apart, the brighter light spilling from the arena in their waiting area. Larry was barely able to walk, under the oppressive blinding light, feeling like walking through mud.

Any pretence of putting on a façade for public consumption was long gone. A sense of gloom clung to him, as he tried to recall the odds of feminisation in the lottery draw. Certainly there were more balls than there were candidates... Some ceremonies did have every entrant becoming a woman. It was vanishingly few where none did, or even just one conversion was a rarity.

Nausea gripped his throat once again. Looking from face to face, as he tried to memorise them as young men, as if that could somehow secure his masculinity against the random draw.

They each plunged their hand into the dark interior of the box. His fingers feeling the balls, and the other scrabbling hands competing for the hope of securing his masculinity. They tumbled with the chaos of all their hands. Each moment, racking up the tension, and Larry's growing certainty that he'd touched the right ball, and it had been snatched by one of the other candidates.

Finally, his fingers closed around one ball, holding it securely. An exchanged look, and all six of them withdrew their arms at the same time.

Holding their future in an open palm, all the balls were white. Their neutral colour was brief, in the intensity of the light, they burst like soap bubbles, staining hands with colour.
