You and Cass were settled in the cozy living room, engrossed in conversation as you discussed potential plans for the day. The excitement of spending time together still hung in the air, and you were gradually starting to warm up to the idea that this summer might not be as intimidating as you first thought.
However, your conversation was suddenly interrupted by the sound of Cass's phone ringing. She glanced at her phone with surprise, her face breaking into a delighted smile. "Hang on a second, Matt. It's a call from an old friend," she said, answering the call. You nodded, listening intently as Cass greeted the caller, "Bethany! It's been so long! How are things over in Dallas?"
As Cass continued her conversation, you couldn't help but eavesdrop a little. It turned out that Bethany was an old friend of Cass's from Texas who was currently in town and wanted to meet up. You were intrigued – you had never heard Cass mention friends from Dallas before.
Cass's voice brimmed with genuine joy as she exclaimed, "You and Daisy are here? That's fantastic!"
Relaxing against the couch, Cass propped her feet up on the coffee table. "Of course, I'd love to catch up! You both are some of my closest friends, y’know!" she chuckled. "Where are you staying?"
As the conversation continued, you found yourself growing more curious. Cass was so excited about meeting up with her friends, she was practically beaming. "Sounds great! Oh, and by the way, my nephew Matt is in town for the summer. Yes, the tiny one I've told you about." Cass added with a playful chuckle. "Ok, perfect! We'll both be there!”
Your ears perked up at the sound of your name. After a few more exchanges, Cass ended the call and turned to you with a bright grin. "Guess what, Matt? Two of my best friends, Bethany and Daisy, are in town from Dallas! We're going to meet up with them!"
You managed a smile, even though your thoughts were racing. Meeting new people, especially friends of Cass, was a bit nerve-wracking. "That's... interesting," you replied cautiously.
Cass's grin remained as she continued, "They're wonderful people, and let’s just say that they have a… soft spot for tinies." She gave you a teasing look, her eyebrows lifting in a knowing way. "I have a feeling you’re going to get a lot of attention today!"
Only managing a nervous chuckle as a reply, your apprehension grew as you tried to discern what Cass meant by "attention." You had barely gotten a handle on navigating Cass's world, and now fate was throwing two strangers into the mix.
Cass's phone buzzed again, and she glanced at her phone before looking back at you. "Looks like they're staying at an AirBnb about a half hour from here. We should head over soon to meet them."
You steeled yourself with a nod, fully aware that meeting Cass's friends was inevitable. Cass got up from her seat, and you watched as she practically radiated excitement as she went to get a bag of her things ready before returning a few minutes later. "Come on, Matt, let's go!" she exclaimed, extending her hand to gently pick you up before heading out the front door.
...
Cass carefully set you near the edge of the cupholder as she got into the car. You couldn't help but sense her enthusiasm as she buckled her seat belt. "Bethany and Daisy are some of the sweetest people I've ever met. You'll love them!"
As the engine purred to life and the car rolled down the winding coastal road, you watched the sun cast a warm, golden glow through the windows. For a moment, the tranquil view brought a sense of comfort, despite the uncertainties ahead.
