By the time I was assigned a room, my hair and nails changed. I was beginning to look more like a cartoon character than a real person. Would I be able to go back to my old self after this?
By lunchtime, my hands and feet looked like they belonged on a 3-D cartoon character. Certainly, I freaked out the orderly who brought me my food. He left before I could start eating.
When I did, an incredible thing happened: The fork in my hand, and the chicken salad at the other end, became like they were in a cartoon. What is going on? I thought.
I sniffed it; it smelled normal to me. I tasted it; it tasted like chicken salad. Whatever this was, it didn't seem to affect that much, at least. I grabbed the water glass; it, too, became cartoonified, but still tasted like water.
The lab tech came in. "Wow," she said, "you've changed a lot. How are you feeling?"
"Believe it or not," I replied, "I feel normal. I seem to be turning into some kind of cartoon character; but I feel like I did before all this happened. Do my test results say anything?"
"I didn't think you'd believe it if I told you. Looking at you, however, I'd say it's no more surprising than what you're already experiencing: Your blood... isn't blood anymore. It seems to be ink and paint."
"Like my hands and feet."
"And your face. Are you able to eat like this?"
"When I touch food, it changes into something like this. It still tastes normal, though."
She took a sniff of my water. "No, thanks; it smells like paint."
Then, someone in a hazmat suit came in. "I'm afraid you're not going back on duty," he said to the lab tech. "This ward is under quarantine, effective immediately."
"What's going on?" I asked.
"Everyone you've come in contact with is showing symptoms that you described from yesterday," he replied. "As a precautionary measure, you will all be confined here, and monitored, in case there's any connection between your symptoms yesterday and your present condition."
Just then, Tabitha was brought in. "Holy shit! What's going on with you?"
"It looks like I'm becoming a toon. And, if they're right, I won't be the only one."
