Chapter #2

A Second Chance

This is my story. It's unlike any story you've heard before. For one thing, it starts where most stories end. And, if it hadn't been for another story ending, and a medical miracle, it would have been the end.

My name was Ken Eaton then. I was born in Springfield, Illinois; the only child of Phil and Tanya Eaton. My parents were great. Even when my adolescent hormones got the better of me, like when I pitched a fit because I was asked to put my own dish in the dishwasher, they were patient with me.

The big thing with me was football. I was the star player on the team, and the coach said that the scouts were impressed with how I played. How impressed? After school, Mom called me to let me know that the first one had come to talk to me about my choice of college.

I was driving home, looking forward to the interview. Odds were that they'd offer me a full-ride scholarship. I could almost picture myself on the gridiron.

Then, motion from out of the corner of my eye interrupted my fantasies. I turned, and saw a car coming my way. I remember thinking, Is he going to hit me?

I don't remember what happened after that. From what I've heard, I'm not sure I want to.

******************************

The next thing I remember, I wasn't in my car anymore; I was lying on my back, with a nasty headache, and something in my mouth and down my throat. I looked around, and saw my parents.

Mom noticed my eyes were open. "He's awake!" she said. Squeezing my hand, she said, "Don't try to talk, Ken; you're on a respirator."

A man I didn't know came into my view. "Hello, Ken," he said. "My name is Dr. Sovac." He took my hand. "If you can hear me, Ken, I want you to blink twice."

I did.

"Good, Ken, good. Now, I want you to squeeze my hand, as hard as you can."

I did it.

"Good, Ken; you've got quite a grip." He let go of my hand; then, he walked to the foot of my bed, and lifted the sheets from my feet. "Now, I want you to try wiggling your toes."

I gave it a try.

"Good, Ken; a good, healthy wiggle." He covered my feet again, then came back to my head. "Now, let's get this tube out, so you can breathe on your own. I'm not going to lie to you, Ken; it's not going to be pleasant. I'm going to count backwards from three; when I give the word, I want you to blow as hard as you can. Three. Two. One. Now."

Well, he didn't lie to me; it hurt so much, I can't imagine how they put it down there in the first place. But, once I stopped coughing, I could breathe.

Dr. Sovac turned to my parents. "I think it would be best if you broke the news." With that, he stepped off to the side.

Dad cleared his throat. "Ken,... there was an accident; nearly every bone in your body was broken. Dr. Sovac... he saved your life with an experimental procedure: he transplanted your brain into another body."

Well, that would explain the headache.

Mom took over. "For the transplant,... we couldn't be fussy about the body you would be given." She reached for her purse. "It's better if I show you. Brace yourself; it's going to be a shock." She held up a mirror.

My jaw dropped. My new face was the face of...
