Chapter #3

A typical morning

    by: shadow Author IconMail Icon
You sat in the lobby of your apartment building, waiting for Brenda to pick you up. “God dam it,” You think to yourself. “Why the hell can’t that woman ever be on time?”

“Oh, my goodness!” You heard a voice shriek. A woman walked over to you, looking concerned. “Who left you here, little guy?” This woman was new in the building because almost everyone knew about you. You were something of an urban legend in the neighborhood.

The woman reached down to pick you up, and you spoke up. “Look, lady, I know I’m short, but I’m an adult like you!”

The woman looked confused at first but shook her head. “My, aren’t you vocal for your age.”

“Look, lady,” You pulled out your wallet and flashed your identification. “Read for yourself.”

The lady looked at your employment card, looking embarrassed. “This is a joke, right?” The woman looked at the building manager.

“Sorry,” The building manager smiled. “But he’s all man; meeting him is a welcome ritual we have here.”

“Sir,” The woman looked at you, blushing. “I’m so sorry.”

“Yeah, yeah,” You waved her off. “Just don’t let it happen again.” The woman walked away, and you yelled, “And if you have any kids tell them the next time the bunch of snot-nosed brats who ring my doorbell to show me their friends is getting shot!”

“My, my,” A voice called. You looked up and saw Brenda walking in, “Someone’s a little cranky pants today.”

You blushed as you walked toward your ride to work; you hated when Brenda talked to you like that, but she got away with it because she was your manager. “What I do on my time is my business,” You remark.

“Well,” Brenda smiled. “You better be careful out here with the big kids, or someday some woman with a mommy complex will snatch you right up. Or maybe some daycare will grab you thinking you’re a student.”

“Whatever,” You responded as she led you to her car, where the usual pink car seat awaited you. “God, I hate that thing.”

“It’s the law,” Brenda defended with a grin. “Besides, it’s all my sister had.”

“So buy a new one!”

“Hey, you’d better be good, or you can take the bus to work from now on.”

You groaned as you imagined trying to explain your situation to a bus or uber driver daily. “What am I testing today?”

Brenda thought for a moment before responding….
