Nicole standing in James’s doorway instantly starts in, “I know, I know. I’m soooo sorry but you saved me big time. Here!” Nicole pushed a hundred dollar bill out and placed it in James’s hand. “Take this, I made a big breakthrough in my thesis and I will be able to get back on track to finish that damn paper this semester so I can finally complete my degree.” Nicole continued.
James wanted to be mad, but it seemed like Nicole was actually contrite and was trying to make meaningful amends. 100 dollars would keep James from missing out on a meal for several weeks so maybe this was a win after all.
“How was my little guy? Did he fuss much?” Nicole asked with genuine curiosity.
“We had some disagreement on bed time and meal timings, but it was nothing I couldn’t handle,” James replied with a degree of bravado over his accomplishment of soothing Mark down from his intense fussing.
“Yeah, I’m not surprised he was fussy, but it looks like you two are having a good time this morning!” Nicole remarked cheerily.
“Yeah absolutely. You know I dig my ‘hang time’ with little Markie!” James happily replied.
“Alright, well I will take this guy with me so he’s off your hands. Oh, and just FYI, looks like Mark got a little dribble on you there on your shirt. Have a good day James and thanks again! You are the best!” Nicole closed out her time with James turning to walk out with Mark in her arms. James looked down at his shirt and saw the drop of drool on his shirt. James wiped at the shirt expecting the drool to be wiped away partially but the spot on the shirt had already been absorbed into the fabric. “Weird,” James thought, “I didn’t feel Mark drool on me”. James changed his shirt and went back to bed to get some more sleep before his first class.
