Antakya, Turkey. Until a few years ago, the ancient city (known as Antioch in Biblical times) had been part of the French Mandate, until it became part of the Turkish Republic after considerable Turkish pressure. After taking control of the city, the Turkish Republic shut down an Arab nationalist newspaper in the city. There was also a major exodus of Christians and Alawites from the city after Turkey took control.
Presently, Turkey maintains a policy of active neutrality in the war. Turkey maintains close commercial and economic ties with Germany, but has not officially allowed Turkey to operate militarily or diplomatically in Turkey, thus denying the Germans a potential avenue of recruiting and supporting potential Arab allies.
