Telling Charlotte

    by: BeeJay Author IconMail Icon
We picked up Shelley from kindergarten, and decided not to tell her yet. We'd need time to explain what I was going through, and we were busy dealing with it ourselves.

Charlotte came over as soon as school let out, even beating Nick's bus. She came up to me, and kissed me. "Hey, lover," she said. "So, what gives with the doctor?" She covered her mouth. "Oh, crap, it isn't catching, is it?"

Not by kissing, it's not. "Sit down, Charlotte; we need to talk."

She sat down, growing more concerned. "Y-you're going to be alright; right, Sean?" She looked at my parents. "Please tell me he's going to be alright."

"We think so," Mom replied. "But listen to him: it's serious."

"I'm listening, Sean. Whatever it is, I'm right here for you."

"That's good to know," I replied. "The doctor said... The doctor said I'm going to have a baby."

She burst out laughing.

When she composed herself again, she said, "Thanks, Sean. That really took the tension out of the room. Now, seriously: What did the doctor say?"

"I told you. He said I'm pregnant. I know it's never happened before. But it's happening to me now."

"It's true, Charlotte," Mom said. "Sean's going to have a baby. And it's yours."

"Mine?" She turned back and forth, looking from me to my parents, then back again. "How... how is that possible?"

We gave her the short explanation.

When we finished, I asked, "So, what you said earlier, about being by my side, no matter what: Does that still go?"

She thought for a few moments, then kissed me. "Of course it still goes," she said. "You're having my baby, after all."

When Nick got home, we sat him and Shelley down, and we told them both.

Nick got a sick look on his face. "But that... that just ain't possible. It ain't!"

"I know it's never happened before, little brother," I replied. "But it's happening to me. I'm going to have a baby."

"No way!" he shouted, and ran from the room.

Letting him cool off, I turned to Shelley. "Do you understand this?"

"Yeah, Teacher told us about babies," she said. "You're really gonna have a baby?"

"It's the truth, little sister. Are you okay with it?"

"Of course!" she said, hugging me. "If no boy's ever done it before, that just makes you the first! My big brother can do anything, even have a baby!"

I hugged her back. Between her and Charlotte, I felt like I really could do anything. Even have this baby.
