Chapter #9A flying race by: Hole The next game was a flying race between the flying mechas. There weren't that many fliers among the 12 participants. Only Bottorah, Carolina, Am-1, and Mothbot. The course would start and end in the stadium, but it extended and went all around the mountains around the stadium, putting each racer to fly through a lot of rough terrain and giving the audience a great show to watch.
Mothbot however didn't plan on trying very hard for this event. High speed flying wasn't even something she was built for. Even if she did win, it would be an exhausting ordeal just to give Kaijuin some prestige, something she wasn't interested in. That would change when she would receive a text message from a certain someone.
Mothbot saw the notification in her hud and opened the message for herself to see. "Hey fluffbot. You ready to race?" it said. Only one person called her fluffbot, and it was the only person ever allowed to call her that.
"Professor Subaru? What is she texting me now for? ," Mothbot thought to herself. "Wait, the race? Is she watching me? Is she watching me on tv at home? No, calm down. Be cool Mothbot. Just text back.
Mothbot opened up a virtual keyboard in her hud and typed a simple message back. "Hey sweetie. You watching the race from home?"
"Nope. Check seat 700391." she texted back.
That was odd, Mothbot thought. Luckily, having a computer brain made finding specific stadium seats extremely easy. She looked at the crowd and saw her target. Sitting in seat 700391 was a familiar japanese girl with short brown hair with shoulder length brown hair in a thick blue coat, waving a gloved hand back at her.
Mothbot blushed in shock. "POrfessor sUbaru? Whatare u doin here at expos/?" Mothbot frantically texted.
Saya Subaru, former head of Kaijuin ai development, texted back: "I'm here to watch you compete. Duh."
Mothbot was still overwhelmed with shock at seeing her human girlfriend in the crowd. "But, what about your job? Isn't it still school season?" Mothbot texted.
"I have a confession to make," Saya texted. "I never got that job at the university."
"What?!?" Mothbot texted.
"I only told you that so you wouldn't worry about me. I've actually been working at a McDonald's for the past year. I'm sorry for lying after all this time."
"Wait but, if that's the case, shouldn't you be working right now? Not traveling all the way to Hokkaido?"
"I got vacation days, don't worry. I can afford to spend a week watching my favorite kaiju girl crush at some fun games."
Mothbot blushed at being called Saya's favorite kaiju girl. She did it all the time, but it still got to her.
"So you better not make my trip a waste of time. I know you can beat all of these other Mecha girls. Do your best.
u"
Mothbot hated when Saya played with her feelings like that, but loved that she could do it so easily. Mothbot changed her mind, she would win the race for Saya.
The competitors stood atop the starting platform, which was raised high above the ground. On the signal, the racers started their engines. They got ready. They got set. Then on go, the launched into the air.
===15 minutes later===
The racers rested on the finishing platform as it lowered them all to the ground. Much to Mothbot's dismay, she lost the race despite her best efforts. She only got third place.
Carolina got forth, the speed focused flyer unable to manage the hard turns and twists of the course. That was Mothbot's best advantage, her maneuverability made what were obstacles for other a chance for her to gain ground for her. However she wasn't able to keep up with Am-1's higher tech engines which got her second place. And obviously, to Kaijuin's pleasure, Bottorah got first place, with her being the perfect balance between speed and maneuverability that Kaijuin designed the course for.
Mothbot had tears in her eyes. Maybe if she actually practiced. Maybe if she had some last minute modifications. If she had done something different, then maybe she could've won. The thoughts went through her head but none trumped her wondering about how Saya felt. She looked up, expecting to find either a disappointed look or an empty seat where her lover was. But her surprised, Saya was cheering. Mothbot thought she must've been cheering Bottorah, ignoring her completely. Then she got a surprising text.
"Great job! You were awesome!" Saya's text said, confusing Mothbot.
"Really? But I lost," Mothbot texted back.
"Who cares about winning. The prize is only bragging rights for the company. What matters is you did your best and looked good doing it."
"Oh. Thank you."
"Np. I'm proud that you did so good. * "
"Thank you. I'm going to keep crying btw. But not because I'm sad, but cause I'm happy."
"Ok, go ahead lol."
Mothbot wiped her eyes and covered the embarrassing grin on her face as she went to her hanger.
