"I'm sort of surprised that you'd be willing to adopt outside of your species," said Mrs. Puffin. "Most tend to stick with their own sort."
"To be fair, I am familiar with the Cooper case, in part because I chased after Conner Cooper for several years, as an Interpol officer," said Samuel. "Of course, I have a fair amount of respect for that thief." He closed his eyes for a moment, before opening them up again. "I owed him one."
"What do you mean by that?" Mrs. Puffin asked.
"Well, about five years back, Connor stole something, a diamond," said Samuel. "I was in the area, so I chased him. It was a chase along the rooftops. Problem was, I stepped on a bad section of a church's roof, slipped, and, I ended up getting caught by a pipe, my leg broken, and I was staring down at a thirty meter drop. Scariest moment I'd been in, up until then."
"What happened?" Mrs. Puffin asked.
"Well, next thing I knew, Cooper had climbed over to me, got out a spare climbing rope, tied it under my arms, and he got me to a safe position," said Samuel. "Then he snatch my handcuff, and cuffed me to another pipe. I was stuck on that roof all night." He had to chuckle, as he looked at Martha. "Still, the next eight weeks were fun."
"That they were," said Martha. "When the one doctor took his cast off, the other told me that I was pregnant."
"Let me get this straight," said Mrs. Puffin. "Not only did Mr. Cooper save your life, he allowed your daughter to be... Oh my!" There was a look of embarrassment on the bird's face.
"He stole a jewel that night, and gave us the time to produce a gem," said Martha, as she kissed Samuel.
At this, Carmelita went "Ew! Yuck!"
