Kala starts acting strange

"Are you okay?" you ask. as Kala starts shaking.

"I don't know what..." she begins, but is interrupted by a gorilla of a man rushing Kala with a stake in his upheld hand.

You learn later that the stake had been dipped in boiled aconitum roots and had several supposedly magic runes carved in it. You're not sure what the stake would have done to Kala if her potential assailant had reached her, but he never got to reach her, because you were there.

See, here's the thing. You're a bad ass.

In the off-the-rack suit you wore on your date, you look like a skinny, five foot eight white guy. But appearances are deceiving. You're five foot eight of lean muscle, hardened by ten years in the US Army, with most of that as a Ranger. You're a professional obstacle racer/MMA instructor. Thanks to a small inheritance you got from your uncle, you can afford to have those jobs.

The look on the guy's face as you dropped him like a bad habit was worth the price of admission.

The attack was over before it begun. Police were there in a blink of an eye, taking the assailant away and taking your statement. You learned the guy's name was Duante Washington, and he was one of those whackadoos who was opposed to humans and nonhumans dating.

Almost from the moment you had dropped Duante, Kala was clinging to you tightly. She didn't look like a badass werewolf. She looked like a frail little human girl clinging desperately to the man who had saved her.
