Sam had been living on the farm for as long as he could remember. He had been brought here as a baby when his parents were captured, and that was ten years ago. Technically, this meant he was a feral, but he had no memory of being outside the pasture fence.
Both his parents had been sold to other farms quite sometime ago, so he knew they had most likely been eaten by now. While he got along well enough with the other children, and the Wolfe's treated him as well as the rest, he secretly wished to live outside the farm, to be free.
But even at his young age, he knew this was futile. With no parents and no herd, he'd be completely defenseless out there. He wish there was some way he could still escape, and find a herd to join, to be part of a family. Well, today, he would get his wish.
It was the early afternoon, and Sam was sitting beneath a tree in the pasture, alone. As he was lost in his own thoughts, he suddenly heard a faint scratching sound coming from beneath him. As he looked down, he was surprised to see a hole forming in the ground front of him.
Suddenly, a hand covered in dirt emerged from within the hole, followed by an arm attached to a body, that of a boy around Sam's age. As the boy climbed out of the hole, he looked around and groaned. "My coordinates were off again!" Then he saw Sam, looking surprised.
"Hello." Said the boy "Can you tell me where I am?" Sam hesitated before speaking ""You're on the Wolfe Farm. Why did you just pop out of the ground like that?" The boy smiled"Because I live underground. My whole herd does."
"Really?"
"Yep! It's great! No predators to worry about, and we all take care of each other, like a big family!"
"Can you show me?"
"Sure! Follow me."
Sam and the boy ventured into the hole, where Sam discovered a tunnel leading deeper into the earth, lined with a sort of glowing moss that illuminated the way. "What's your name?" Sam asked "My friends call me Mole. Stay close to me, it's easy to get lost down here."
So Sam followed Mole through the twisting tunnels leading ever deeper underground, until he was brought to an amazing sight. There was an entire town of humans down here, living in homes carved into the very rock! Everyone seemed to happily go about their days, not the least bit worried about being eaten.
It was then that Sam knew, he wanted to stay here.
