Kevin’s breathing was shallow, his heart thudding in his chest as he stared down at the impossibly tiny figure of his mother at his feet. She was so small, so fragile-looking, that he was afraid to move. The faint smell of his own socks filled the air, and though it embarrassed him, his mind was too overwhelmed to focus on anything except the strange and surreal sight of Beth standing there, naked and exposed.
Tears welled up in his eyes. “I’m so sorry, Mom,” he whimpered, his voice trembling. “I didn’t mean to… I didn’t know this would happen…”
Beth, shivering from the cool air brushing against her bare skin and the sheer absurdity of the situation, looked up at the towering figure of her son. His face was scrunched up, on the verge of tears, his large form looming over her like a confused colossus. She realized he was completely paralyzed by guilt and fear. She had to do something to snap him out of it.
“Kevin!” she called up, her voice high-pitched and strained. But her tiny lungs couldn’t produce the volume needed to break through his panicked haze. Frustration bubbled up in her chest. “Kevin, listen to me!”
When her shouts failed, Beth decided on a more direct approach. The warm smell of his feet was strange, but it barely registered in her thoughts as she walked up to his socked toes. Desperate to grab his attention, she reached out and pressed her hands against the rough cotton, feeling the warmth radiating from his skin beneath. When that didn’t work, she kicked at his toes with all her strength—not that it was much at her current size.
Still, Kevin flinched slightly. Emboldened, Beth climbed onto the top of his foot, clinging to the ridges of his sock as she scrambled onto the soft fabric. “Kevin! Look at me!” she shouted, jumping up and down on his toes.
Finally, Kevin’s eyes flicked down toward his feet. His gaze landed on the tiny figure bouncing atop his toes, and he blinked in confusion before realization washed over him. “M-Mom?” he stammered.
“Yes, it’s me!” Beth shouted, relief flooding her voice. “Pick me up, Kevin! Please, just… pick me up so we can talk.”
Kevin hesitated, his trembling hands hovering uncertainly. “I—I don’t want to hurt you…”
“You won’t,” Beth assured him, her voice softening. “Just be careful, okay? I trust you.”
Swallowing hard, Kevin crouched down and cupped his hands around her tiny frame. He moved with excruciating slowness, lifting her as if she were made of glass. The warmth of his hands enveloped her, and for the first time since the transformation, Beth felt a strange sense of comfort. His touch wasn’t rough or clumsy—it was protective, almost tender.
As Kevin held her in his palms, she leaned into the warmth instinctively, her small body relaxing slightly. It was strange to feel so vulnerable yet so shielded at the same time. Her son’s hands were enormous, his fingers wrapping around her like a cocoon, but instead of feeling trapped, she felt… safe. The sensation was both unsettling and oddly reassuring.
“Mom,” Kevin whispered, his wide eyes full of sorrow and fear. “What do we do? How do I fix this?”
Beth looked up at him, her small hands resting on the edge of his thumb as she steadied herself. Her heart ached seeing her son so distraught. “We’ll figure it out, Kevin,” she said, her voice firm despite the surreal circumstances. “But first, you need to calm down. It’s not your fault.”
“But it is!” Kevin protested, his voice cracking. “If I hadn’t pressed that stupid button—”
“Stop,” Beth interrupted gently. “I need you to focus, okay? We can’t change what happened, but we can figure out what to do next. Together.”
Kevin nodded hesitantly, his tears slowing. “O-Okay.”
Beth took a deep breath, trying to gather her own thoughts. The feeling of being cradled in her son’s hands was unnervingly soothing, and the warmth of his skin radiated through her. She didn’t understand why, but being held like this made her feel… secure. Protected. And, to her confusion, even a little connected in a way she couldn’t quite explain.
She pushed those thoughts aside. “Kevin, put me somewhere safe while we think this through. Maybe on your desk? And let’s try not to panic. We’ll figure out what that device does, and we’ll fix this. But I need you to stay strong for me, okay?”
Kevin nodded again, his grip steadying as he gently carried her to his desk. As he set her down, Beth couldn’t help but feel a pang of sadness at the sheer size difference between them now. But she quickly pushed it aside. They had to focus, and she had to be strong—for both of them.
“Now,” Beth said, crossing her arms as she looked up at him, “let’s take another look at that button. And Kevin… thank you for being careful with me.”
