readers choice

There in the grass was a small almost foot tall boy! He was wrapped in nothing but some draped cloth and covered in dirt. He appeared to be about 10 or 11 years old, sandy blonde hair tussled in a mess, and baby blue eyes that pierced out amid his dirty face. They sat staring at each other in disbelief before the boy finally snapped back to his senses and made a jolt back into the underbrush. In his haste he stumbled over a twig and tumbled forward hard. John heard him yelp in pain and begin to whimper making him instinctively reach out before pausing unsure how to proceed. The small boy sat up and was clutching his shoulder he had landed on. For a moment he had forgotten about the giant looming over behind him and was showing his hurt shoulder attention. John's mind was racing. If he was going to act he'd have to do it soon before the boy made a break for it again and he might lose him forever.

"Are...you all right?", John asked. He wasn't even sure this creature that looked like a normal boy spoke English. The boy upon hearing the voice jerked around and looked up in fear. John sat watching him for signs of bolting when he heard some people in the yard next door. Fearful they would somehow see over his high privacy fence he made his move and wrapped his hand around the boy and lifted him up to his chest. The boy's screams were muffled by his clothing but he could feel his little arms and legs flailing in panic against his chest. John hurried to his home and closed the door behind him. He peered out the window checking to see if anyone had seen him. He walked to the couch and brought the boy out away from his chest as he gently set him down on the coffee table. The small child was scrambling around the table as he looked for a way to safety but he didn't think he could jump down unharmed. Feeling trapped he stood staring up at his giant captor. John sat on the couch watching him back. It wasn't until he heard a voice that John's mind left the scenarios in his head back to reality.

"Dad..?" John's son Kevin, who he forgot was here on one of his visits, came into the living room rubbing the sleep from his eyes. Both John and the small boy jumped back in surprise. As Kevin walked to the couch he noticed the boy standing on the table. "Why are you playing with dolls?" he asked. When the little boy moved Kevin started to realize he wasn't a toy. "Wha....who..." was all he could muster as he stood in shock.

"I found him...in my garden." John then went on to explain his finding and how he brought him inside. Kevin listened but never took his eyes off the small boy. Kevin reached his hand toward him and the boy screamed and scurried to the other side of the table. Kevin hesitated but then reached again for him. The boy seeing the hand advancing looked to John as if to plead to stop his son. John watched as Kevin advanced on the small boy slowly and the fear it was causing him and he was secretly enjoying it. Kevin's hand made contact and he closed his fingers around the boy's waist. He lifted the boy off the table and started laughing when the tiny thing started to kick and struggle. He just held him there watching him fight his grip laughing the whole time.

"He's so small he can't even fight back, daddy!" John was watching this like it was some sci-fi movie and his son was the giant villain. Kevin tilted the terrified boy in his hand this way and that as he examined him. The boy had stopped struggling for the moment and griped the giant hand to steady himself as he was being tilted in various positions. "How did you get so little," Kevin asked. The small boy remained silent as he watched the two giants. "My name's Kevin. What's yours?" Still nothing. "He must not know how to talk," he spoke to his dad. John also remained silent as he watched his son continue to handle the small boy. Kevin walked to the couch carrying his small new find with him. Sitting down he rested the small boy on his bare thigh but held him in place with his hand. "I wonder if he was born little...," he wondered out loud. Looking up at his dad, "Daddy, can I keep him?"
