Despite him being farther away than all the others, and therefore being the most difficult to reach, Derek decided that he would try to get James's attention. He seemed like the nicest one, and the most likely one to actually help him if he somehow got him to notice him. His brother would probably relentlessly tease him, and Marco and Tyson, based on what Derek has seen, would likely do the same. They might also do something that would terrify him because they thought it would be funny.
So, he decided to start walking towards the edge of the couch. Almost immediately,
Derek realized how lucky he was to have moved at that moment, since he saw Adric lower his immense foot onto the couch cushion, just barely missing his particle-sized brother. If he stayed in that spot for just a few more seconds, he would have ended up under his brother's foot again. Derek knew that if he wanted to stay safe, he couldn't just stand there and think about how frightening that was. He ran even faster to the edge and looked down.
Climbing down the gigantic, soft mountain would take a while. He was considering trying to just jump off, since his extremely tiny size would probably allow him to survive. Still, what if he landed in an even more unsafe place? Two of the giant kids were on the floor in front of the couch, and they were moving around a lot as they watched the movie. It was possible that he would land on them. If he did, he likely wouldn't be able to get their attention at all, since their movements would throw him around at best and end his life at worst. If he climbed down, he could move more slowly and carefully, and have a better chance of avoiding them. But, the kids could always just move even closer and disrupt him anyway. Overall, no matter what he did, there was the possibility of him being in a dangerous situation.
