Chapter #3

Maddie’s Giant Room

"I'd like to experiment with this some more," Ollie said enthusiastically, a glint of excitement in his eyes. He attempted to pull the stopper out, but it seemed as though the bottle had other plans. It was stubbornly stuck, resisting his efforts to reveal its contents. With a determined tug, he finally managed to pry it open, but as luck would have it, the hand holding the bottle jerked up abruptly, and we were splashed with the mysterious shrinking elixir. The liquid felt cold against our skin, sending a shiver down our spines, and within moments, our clothes were drenched.

"Oops, darn it," Ollie cursed, hurriedly putting the stopper back in place. We both stared at each other in disbelief, not quite processing what had just happened. Before we could gather our thoughts, I felt an unusual tingling sensation on my skin, and suddenly, it was as if the world around us was transforming. We began to shrink rapidly, and it was a surreal experience, watching Ollie and the room around us grow larger while we became smaller. Within seconds, the shrinking stopped, leaving us knee-deep in the once-plush purple carpet that now felt like a vast landscape.

"Dude, we just shrunk!" exclaimed Ollie, finding the situation thrilling. "This is so cool!"

"As long as we can find the antidote and return to our normal size," I remarked dryly, trying to suppress my own rising anxiety.

"Don't worry so much. The antidote is on the coffee table," Ollie reassured, his voice tinged with optimism. "And if we can't manage it ourselves, my sister is home. We can ask her for help."

"Somehow, that doesn't reassure me. Your sister might find it amusing to keep us as pets," I expressed my concern, the image of being tiny and at the mercy of Ollie's mischievous sibling not sitting well with me.

Ollie chuckled, though there was a hint of agreement in his laughter. "Yeah, she might think it's funny." Despite our predicament, he didn't seem overly worried. I had to admit that being shrunk was a surreal and fascinating experience, something I'd only seen in sci-fi movies. "Let's first try opening the bottle ourselves."

We waded through the thick carpet, our steps feeling like mini-expeditions in this now towering room. Finally reaching the coffee table, which seemed like a colossal mountain to us now, we gazed up at the assortment of once-familiar objects that surrounded us, now appearing gargantuan. There was the TV remote, a can of soda, and an open bag of Cheetos, all now oversized and daunting. The antidote, a small vial lying on its side, seemed like a tiny treasure chest that held the key to our return to normalcy. Despite our best efforts, we couldn't manage to open it, our tiny hands lacking the strength to twist the cap.

"I guess we'll have to go with plan B," Ollie conceded, a touch of disappointment in his voice. "Unless we want to wait for a week until my parents get home, Maddie is our only option." I nod, somewhat nervous about putting our fate in the hands of a 13-year-old girl.

Unfortunately, Maddie's room was a floor above us, posing a challenge for us to reach her. "How are we going to get up to her?" I asked, feeling a bit daunted by the prospect.

"Well, the stairs are always an option, but I think they would take forever to climb," stated Ollie, his mind already working on a more ingenious plan. "I have a better idea; follow me." With that, we made our way back to the main floor. Ollie led me through the thick carpet until we arrived at an air vent in the wall. He glanced back at me with a mischievous grin before crawling inside. It became apparent that Ollie intended to use the air conditioning system as a means to make our way upstairs. Though not entirely thrilled by the idea, I agreed that it beat the exhausting alternative of climbing the stairs. The metal ducts echoed our footsteps as we navigated the maze of passages, until finally, we found a larger one that went straight up.

As luck would have it, we didn't have to wait long before the air conditioning system kicked to life with a deafening roar. A powerful gust of cold wind hit us, knocking us off our feet, but soon we felt ourselves being lifted upwards. Ollie couldn't contain his excitement and gave a victorious fist pump. We held on, spread out like starfish, as the forceful air carried us effortlessly through the ducts, propelling us closer to Maddie's room.

In what seemed like no time at all, we found ourselves deposited right in Maddie's room. It was a chaotic sight, with clothes scattered on the floor, used tissues, and other debris not quite making it into the bin. Looking up, I saw Maddie lying on her stomach, engrossed in an iPad, which now looked like a massive screen to us. Ollie's sister, who was normally small and scrawny, now appeared colossal compared to our shrunken state. Maddie reached for a can of Coke on her nightstand, taking a long sip before crushing the can effortlessly with her hand. Ollie and I scrambled to avoid getting hit as she carelessly tossed it toward the garbage, missing by a wide margin. Maddie scrunching her nose and then letting out a boyish burp.
