“Ugh, maybe I should just join you for studying? I don’t really want to do that during my free session, but it’s better than just wandering around. Plus, if I did walk around for no reason, people would assume I’m creeping around for skirts to look under. Whoever started that rumor is a real…”
You stopped talking when you noticed that Leaf was staring at you in a way different than how she normally did. Her usually stoic and unreadable expression actually looked confused. Which confused you in return.
“Is something wrong? Something on my face?”
“No, that’s not it.” Leaf’s voice was still monotone.
“Then what is it? You actually look something other than serious for once.”
Hearing you say that made her look slightly angry, and she turned away with a small huff. “Rude. I’m not going to tell you then, you’ll figure it out.”
“Come on Leaf, don’t be childish. Just tell me what’s wrong.” You walked in front of her, causing her to turn away from you again. You continually walked around the unresponsive girl when you noticed something. You were standing eye level with her. That was weird because you were usually probably at least half a head taller than her. You looked down, thinking she might be standing on her tiptoes for some reason. But she wasn’t.
“Hey… Leaf? Did you get taller recently?” You asked the girl who was still looking away from you.
“No.”
“Okay, then I must just be shrinking!” You say in mock panic. “Oh man! If this keeps up, I’ll be a speck in no time! I’ll be able to fit inside of your shoe!” You continued acting like you were worried about shrinking, hoping to get Leaf to look at you. But she didn’t bite. “Leaf, do you really not care if I shrink?”
No response.
You sighed dramatically, thankful that there was no one left in the hall to watch your little act. “I guess I’m doomed then.” You brought your hand to your head. “I’ll shrink away into nothing and disappear. If I’m lucky, you’ll just crush me on your way to the library. I’d rather be snuffed out by a friend than some stranger I’d rather-!”
You stopped your rant when Leaf suddenly turned around and grabbed your wrist. She was looking at you seriously, but in a different way than normal. “I would never let that happen. No matter how small you get, I will protect you.” She nodded her head, as if to assure you.
“Uh, ahaha. L-leaf…” You awkwardly stumbled out a response while blushing, “I was just messing around. I’m not really shrinking.”
Your friend tilted her head to the side quizzically. “Are you sure about that? I thought you finally noticed.”
Finally noticed what? Leaf was acting really strange today. You were about to comment on that, but then you realized that Leaf was looking down on you. “L-leaf, you’re getting bigger!”
“No, you’re shrinking. Really shrinking.”
You wanted to deny it and call her crazy, but you noticed how you were constantly having to look up at her. As every second passed, you continued to dwindle down even further. You were two shocked to speak, long before you even shrunk to about level with her stomach. Leaf tried to squat down closer to your level, but by the time she finished, you were below her knees! She thought about getting on her knees, but decided not to. You were shrinking so fast now… if she took her eyes off you, you could possibly disappear without a trace!
So you shrunk further and further, quickly becoming small enough for Leaf to grab you like a doll. But even while being held, you continued to shrink in your friend's hand. Mercifully, you stopped shrinking before disappearing completely, but you were only a couple of inches tall at best. Looking up at Leaf, you didn’t feel like you were staring at a friend. It felt more like staring up at a goddess.
“You’re… so small.” Leaf’s voice didn’t sound it, but she was astonished and very confused.
“I can see that.” You answered dryly. “You know, I really expected a stronger reaction than that.”
“Sorry.”
“Ugh. Forget it.” You rubbed the back of your neck. “Uh, thanks for saving me… I guess.”
“I just picked you up.”
“Yes I know that, but I’d rather be in your hand than on the ground. So you kind of rescued me.”
“I don’t think that counts as saving you.”
“Just accept my thanks.”
“You’re welcome.”
Despite the crazy situation, you chuckled at your friend. She still seemed completely unshaken by this. She had just watched you shrink to fit in her hand in a mere minute, but she was as calm as ever. It was almost unnerving, but it was good to have someone like her watching over you. You were in good hands, you thought.
“I know who did this to you.”
“Leaf, who could’ve possibly done this to me? There’s no one else here.”
“It was Janine.”
That was just ridiculous. “How could she have done this? You’re just accusing her because she was the last girl I talked to.”
“She’s a ninja, and you always say she smells. She was probably using some kind of ninja poison to shrink you.”
“That sounds more ridiculous than me just shrinking randomly. I’ve joked that she smells since I’ve known her. Even if your crazy theory was true, I would’ve ended up like this a long time ago. And you would end up shrunk too!”
“The poison only works on boys.” She defended her theory. “But I wouldn’t put it past her trying to get rid of me.”
“Leaf, you’re being crazy. Janine had nothing to do with this. You’re just protective and are jumping to conclusions because she was the last one we saw. She’s super nice and would never do anything like this.”
Leaf huffed dismissively.
“Well, whatever happened, looks like I’m sticking with you. How about we just go to the library like you planned? Don’t want to miss out on studying. And I bet there will be someone in there who can help me. Let’s go there!” You insisted, hoping that Leaf wouldn’t waste both of your time hunting down Janine.
