"This is a police matter, young man." Sternly, Don said. "Besides, it took you a year to get this far."
"It took you twenty... Strongman." Frowning, I countered.
"So you know about my past." Softly, Don said. "Then you should also know I don't relish others making the same mistakes my team and I did."
"We are only after those who threaten the city." Serious, I said. "You can have the average thugs."
"There is nothing average in this city." Darkly, Don replied. "This is my case..."
"Was your case." Firmly, I interrupted. "Now... it's our case."
Don paused before taking a breath. "I'm not going to talk you out of this, am I?"
"Sykes is looking in all the wrong places but that won't last." Serious, I said. "If we work together instead of against, we could get ahead of that lunatic and stop him from getting whatever he is after."
Don sighed. "As chief of police, I can't let you do that." Softly, he said. "Stay off my radar and then, maybe, we can stop this mad man before it's too late."
Don and I nodded at each other and left the construction site. Upon returning to headquarters, taking the long way around to avoid being followed, I reported my findings and Don Flynn's warning to stay off his radar.
