It was unknown what exactly caused the changes, although some local theorists and crackpots decided that it was a passing comet or a government test. Regardless, people all around town all had similar effects: All woke up in a cold sweat at exactly 4:12 AM, visions of "abilities" flashing into their minds. In the coming days, 40% of the town got sick but recovered within 12 hours, with some people who were awake that night now suffering from the "disease". In the next few weeks, eventually people discovered that those flashes were more than hallucinations, and they now possessed the powers they had seen previously.
Strangely enough, the area with the highest concentration of "Gifted", as they came to call themselves, were along the street the Smith's lived on. On this street, 100% of people living there had powers, although the actual usefulness varied wildly. For example, Martina had the ability to read minds, something that came in handy with her maid duties, whereas Naomi had the ability to manipulate water, but only water she was in contact with.
