Someone finds a magical spellbook, full of ancient spells to try out on the other members of the town. Some examples of spells are: Possession, Mind Control, Body Swap, Body Part Swap, and anything else the author can think of.
Someone discovers how to astral project, either from their own experiments or by being taught by someone else. Astral Projection lives the user's body unconscious and without a soul, but their soul can fly around and control other bodies. Depending on the user's experience and willpower, they either can or cannot take over an occupied body.
Someone summons something, such as a Succubus, Demon, spirit, etc. Depending on the summoning, the creature either will have free rein to do as they wished or be controlled by the summoner.
Someone discovers an item that gives them a magical power as long as it's worn/held. Some examples of powers given could be possession, body swapping, invisibility, mind control, and many more. The item could be anything, but some examples would be rings, necklaces, wands, or anything else that isn't technological.
