Chapter #6

Mordin's Massive Mishap

    by: MightyHalberd Author IconMail Icon
The sleep evening aboard the Normandy as it was docked in Illium while most of the crew went on shore leave was interrupted by a loud boom echoing through the ship. The door to Miranda's office flew open as the Cerberus operative emerged, pulling out her pistol as a half-dressed Kelly Chambers ran up to her with her own sidearm drawn.

"What the bloody hell was that?" Miranda demanded.

"I was hoping you'd know!" Kelly gasped, trying to catch her breath. "It came from this end." Miranda gestured for her to follow and the two went down the corner quickly but cautiously. Hearing footsteps drawing closer, the pair froze and raised their weapons.

"Who's there?" came the familiar voice from around the corner.

"Thane? It's me and Chambers!" Miranda said, still holding her weapon up as she and Kelly moved around the corner, coming face to face with Thane Krios leveling his own weapon at the two before all three lowered them.

"I feared we were under attack," Krios explained.

"Highly unlikely," EDI chimed in over a nearby communication panel. "No damage to the ship's exterior, and the blast was localized in the laboratory." Realizing who was still on the ship, the three immediately dashed down the corridor to the lab, where a purple haze was visible within the room. EDI's announcement that she was filtering the air went unheard as the trio dashed inside.

The lab was in utter disarray. Every bit of glassware in the room was shattered and towards the opposite end of the room the tables were shoved away from a splash of lilac smeared across the wall. Stepping over broken bits of equipment, Kelly made her way through the carnage to find Mordin lying against a broken table, coated in a thin layer of lilac dust.

"Dr. Solus?" Kelly said cautiously. There were a few painful seconds of hesitation before the Salarian coughed out a puff of purple dust and opened his eyes.

"Reaction was more volatile then expected," he announced in his usual tone of voice. "Not going to attempt that without proper protective gear." Feeling greatly relieved, Thane and Miranda stepped over to help Mordin to his feet, the three of them dusting the lilac material off of their clothes.

"I really hope this stuff isn't toxic," Kelly said, eying the lilac gunk suspiciously.

"Highly unlikely, materials used were triple purified and made entirely of material that will not trigger a physiological reaction," Mordin rambled before inhaling sharply. "Extremely safe, would not even give Quarians a fever."

"We should get you to the medbay to be sure," Miranda insisted.

"Nonsense, I'm in perfect health," Mordin said brightly, even as he felt a small twinge in his insides. "Only part of me injured is my pride, I assure you."

"And most of the lab," Thane pointed out.

Mordin smiled. "Duly noted."

Miranda rubbed her temple in irritation. "Well in the meantime...
