"Gooood mornin' Serry!"
Chewing placidly on her bagel, Serena barely even glanced up, even as the dulcet tone of that voice gave her a pleasant feeling. "Morning Bianca. Any trouble in medical?"
Literally sliding into the seat across from her, the ship's medical officer Bianca Verde put on a playfully dour expression, her crazy viney hair bouncing all over the place as she shook her head. "Tsk tsk, always work on the mind." Grinning, the plant girl leaned over, twirling a finger around. "I swear, one day I'm gonna take a peek in that noggin and find a regulation rulebook where your cerebellum should be."
Serena actually flinched and nearly spilled her coffee as the doctor poked her in the forehead. "Ugh, MUST you do that?" she demanded, lowering her hat over the site of the assault.
"Yes!" Dr. Verde insisted, the Vinyan folding her hands in front of her as those strange black eyes looked into hers. "You're more honest when you're flustered like that! I'm still hoping to see the real you under that fancy uniform."
"Is that some sort of come-on?"
Verde's grin widened. "The offer's always on the table."
Serena rolled her eyes and chugged more coffee. She wondered, like a lot of people did, just HOW she fell into the good graces of the good doctor Bianca Verde. The two were such polar opposites that they were practically matter and antimatter. Serena was never without her beloved uniform in pristine blue, pressed and clean. Bianca seemed allergic to hers, and only ever wore it paired with exotic floral accessories. Serena wanted everything orderly and in its place. Bianca thrived in chaos so well, she invited it. Serena was disliked by nearly everyone. Bianca...well, quite a few people claimed that offer that she gave Serena, let's just say. It was a pairing that simply could not function in any sensible situation, and yet the two just kept on drifting back together.
And while Serena would never admit it openly, she really did like having her around. Chalk it up to the telepathic empathy of the vinyan species if you want, but it was the truth. Even if Bianca loved nothing more then to test her patience. Case in point...
"So, we're on a bog standard ferrying job, carrying one bigwig somewhere else deep in secure Sol space," Bianca immediately began pitching. "So with all the free time I was thinking-"
"I'm good, thank you," Serena interrupted. "I plan to spend that time retrofitting the security protocols. New system is a bit sticky so-"
"Sereeena, you're droughting me right now," Bianca whined playfully, leaning on the table. "You're just always so busy working! Working this, working that, working him, working her. You're gonna work yourself to death before you get a chance to really live!"
A bit flustered at this surprisingly insightful line, Serena didn't immediately have a reply to this. "I...I'm not ALWAYS working..." she insisted weakly.
"It's still working if you're having fun, you doofus. Seriously, you're work life is so out of balance, it can't be healthy for you."
Averting her stare from her friend's pleading gaze, Serena finished off her bagel and got to her feet. "I know how to take care of myself, Bianca. I always have." Thinking the matter resolved, she turned to stride out the door again, before there was a loud scrape and she was suddenly grabbed.
"Hmm, look at this," Bianca mused, spinning her friend around in her powerful grip and looking deeply into her eyes. "Sunken eyes, anemic pallor, irregular fasciculation in the facial muscles..."
"Wh-what are you doing?"
"Not good, not good at all," the plant girl declared, letting go and backing up to give her space. "Clearly the security chief is suffering from maladies relating to overwork and stress. As the Bos' Chief Medical Officer, I will have to recommend she be removed from duty until her health recovers!"
Serena's hands curled into fists as she really did start twitching. "You...you wouldn't dare..."
"I'm sorry to go nuclear like that but...you know it's only because I care, right?" Serena opened her mouth to retort, but it died in her throat as her friend's eyes started to water. Her anger melting away in an instant, she stood there defeated. "Just one small thing okay? Then you'll never have to do it again if you don't want to."
Serena took a deep breath, straightening out her lapels. "...okay." The loud squee hurt her ears as the doctor wrapped her powerful arms around her in a delighted hug.
"Ohhh, you're going to love it, I just know it!"
"Love....what?" Serena choked out as her lungs were crushed.
