Chapter #4

In my room!

by: Thomas Johnson Author IconMail Icon
Alexis led the movers up to her new room, which was much bigger than her old one. Plus, she didn't have to share it with any of her siblings anymore, so this was an absolute win! She started pointing and instructing the movers where to set down her things, playing true to her bossy attitude. Luckily for them, she didn't own too much stuff and the things she did own were relatively small and lightweight, so maneuvering around with them was a breeze. Alexis' stuff was all moved into her bedroom in a 20-minute span and she was soon booting the movers from her space.

"Thanks for the help, but I need to Alexisify my room and make it pretty, like me!" she said as she opened her door and fluttered her eyes at the movers.

They laughed and shot her a thumbs up, leaving the young girl alone to decorate her room. Her face quickly switched from a look of fake happiness to one of actual happiness as she hopped onto her bed and sprawled out on top of it. "Finally, my own room! she exclaimed happily.

She opened her eyes and started to look around her room, imagining all the cool things she could have inside that she couldn't have in her old room. As she observed her ceiling, she noticed a small square, similar to one that would lead to an attic. There was a string connected to the middle of the panel, but the bottom of it was tucked up into the panel, so you couldn't pull down on it.

"Hmm." Alexis thought to herself, "Maybe it's more of my room! She imagined laughing in Anthony's face when he discovered that her room actually had two floors: one to sleep in and one to hang out.

There was one problem though: Alexis was about only 4 feet tall, so there was no way she was going to be able to reach this mystery panel. That is unless she had something that could take her that high. "A ladder!" Alexis said to herself as she sat upright in bed and looked around her room, hoping a ladder would pop up. If she had one, then she could just climb up and try to free the string so she could pull down the panel to see what was on the other side! foolproof!

"But where can I gonna get a ladder from? she pondered, tapping her chin.

Alexis got up to walk around as she tried to think of a possible solution to her problem, as she looked out her bedroom window. She spotted one of the movers conveniently heading toward the house with a ladder in hand, following her father.

"Perfect," she said to herself with a smile, as she headed out of her room, knowing she was about to make something happen. She came to a stop at the top of the stairs, where she saw her dad, John, directing some of the other movers where to go.

"Daddy?" she called out, which made his head immediately whip over to her.

"Yes, baby? What is it?"

She cleared her throat and softened her voice. "One of the movers put a box of my stuff on a high shelf and I can't reach it. can I use that guy's ladder?" she said innocently, pointing at the mover holding the ladder.

John looked over at the mover with the ladder and nodded over to Alexis, "Go help her out. She's 4 foot nothing for christ's sake I don't know why one of your guys would put her shit so damn high.

"Yes sir! Sorry about that" the mover said, heading toward Alexis.

Alexis stood outside of her room and pointed to where s' the wanted the ladder. "Right under that square on the ceiling. I wanted to grab a toy from a box he put up there".

"Do you want me to open it up for you so you can climb up there? Looks like the string to pull it down is wedged between the panel and the ceiling" the mover suggested.

She thought about it, it lessened the amount of work she'd have to put into exploring. She smiled at the mover, "Sure mister, thanks!".

The mover smiled back and quickly propped the ladder, pushing up on the panel to get the string loose. After about 2 minutes he was finally about to get it unstuck, to which he then got off the ladder and pulled down on the string. the panel only opened up at an angle, due to another ladder being attached to it. It slowly extended as the panel was opened up entirely, and finally connected the mysterious attic-like room to the floor.

"Do you want me to go up there and grab your toy for you? the mover asked.

Alexis was not a fan of this notion. There was no way she was going to let anybody else explore this mystery room without her seeing it first. "No thanks, I can do that myself. I think you should go back to helping my daddy before he gets mad about something again. He gets mad at a lot of things" she said as she tried to get the man to leave.

"Right on," he said as he threw the ladder under his arm and headed out of her room. Alexis shut the door behind him and locked it. Nobody should be bothering her for at least the next hour as her family had to get situated in their new living spaces. Alexis looked up at the open panel in her ceiling. "Time for exploring!" she said to herself as she headed toward it. Alexis climbed up the angled ladder with ease, as it was quite similar to one of the jungle gyms at her old school. She stopped when she reached the top and gulped. What if there was a monster in there? A ghost? Maybe it was full of bugs, or even a vampire! She shook herself rid of these thoughts. She then took a deep breath and peeked her head in.

Inside, she saw a medium-sized room, with a single dim lightbulb hanging from the ceiling. The light illuminated a large object on the other side of the room, which was covered in cream-colored sheets. There was also a smaller table-looking object near the larger one, just to the side of it.

"What the heck! Somebody left their stuff up here" she said to herself, still looking around. She walked up into the room and begun to look for a light switch of some sort to see if she could make the room brighter. Alexis was able to spot one on the wall, with a round dial, which was different from what she was used to. "I sure hope this works" she said aloud, turning the dial slowly. Luckily, it did work, as the lightbulb had begun to shine brighter, and showed the objects in even greater detail. She walked over to the larger object and peeled the sheet away.

It was a large plexiglass cylinder with an odd metal platform inside of it, and some sort of tablet embedded into the inside of it. Outside of the cylinder, there was some sort of sci-fi-looking computer, with two large buttons on the top. As she got closer, she could see that one was red, which said Off, and the other was green, but said On. As she inspected the cylinder, she could see that it had door handles on it, meaning that one was able to step inside. Near the handle, she could see a notice.

NOTICE: MAXIMUM CAPACITY OF 2 SUBJECTS

"C-a-p-a-c-i-t-y? What does that mean?" she said to herself, looking for more clues.

Her attention then turned to the smaller object that was still covered. She pulled that sheet off and revealed it to be a tray, like what surgeons usually place their instruments on, and a small book. It didn't have too many pages, and sort of looked like a typed-up instruction manual.

Arianna picked up the book and inspected the cover, which said:

Modi-Chamber Owner's Manual by Dr. Rubenstock

PLEASE READ BEFORE USE.

FAILURE TO DO SO MAY RESULT IN DEATH OR OTHER UNCERTAINTIES
"

"Death?" Alexis whispered, before putting the book down quickly. She had gotten goosebumps after reading that. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath. "Alexis, you can do this. you're a big girl and big girls don't get scared". She calmed down after hearing her own affirmations, and picked the manual back up.

What does she do?
