Minutes passed as Luci arranged her supplies on the table before her. Tomes and scrolls containing well known works of alchemy, as well as her own discoveries, spread out to her left and right. While vials, beakers, mortar, pestle, and various substances lay just ahead of her but still within reach. Laying directly in front of her was the small glowing vial of Rizzik's potion.
"Okay the first step is to break this beautiful brew back into its constituent parts." Luci spoke aloud. She was aware of her habit to voice her thoughts as she studied, but it helped her to work through problems faster. Even in the presence of others she'd muse through a problem vocally if one was presented. It had garnered her a reputation for perhaps being a bit eccentric, but it was necessary in her opinion to work at her full potential. And this wonderful elixir demanded her full potential.
Carefully using a dropper to remove another sample Luci placed a single drop of potion into an open glass dish. Then she grabbed a vial of white powder. The dust was a mix of various lightly enchanted substances that would change color and appearance based on what they came in contact with. The mix was her own blend designed to break down and adhere to as many different base ingredients and combinations as possible.
"Okay, just a gram or so of powder...alright, perfect. Now let's see what you're made of." Luci said placing the powder to the side and grabbing her notes. What happened next was unexpected. Most alchemical substances had only a couple active agents and then a bunch of stabilizing materials. But the small mound of powder shimmered and began rapidly shifting form and color. Indicating a large amount of active alchemical reagents were present in the potion.
"Dourvine...quillasp venom...fairy root, demon wort, nether quartz, zeugal tounge, soul stone? Wait there's more! My god what did that fool do? Empty a vial of distilled chaos serum in here?" Luci wondered as she struggled to write her list. Suddenly a small chunk of the powder broke off, turned into a tiny red and purple frog, and hopped away.
Luci paused for a moment staring, her gaze unamused. "Distilled chaos serum…" she begrudgingly wrote on her ingredient list. A few more minutes of hectic scribbling and her list was complete.
"By Bule Thorns grave, 52 active agents. How did it not explode? Rizzik you...gen- geniu- -cough,gack!-" Luci almost complimented her rival, but gagged out of sheer revulsion at the idea.
Shaking her head she quickly set about isolating what ingredients were most compatible. She cross referenced that with a list of effects the potion had. Before long she had what she hoped was a list of possible isolated effects.
"Okay, growth, muscle increase, density augment, breast…" Luci continued, reviewing the effects and possible combinations.
"Hmm, best to include a limiter agent. There's too many combinations, if something goes wrong I don't want it to be permanent." Grabbing a few pre-enchanted liquids she quickly set to work.
Before long she had a slew of cooling and brewing potions going. Various smokes and scents filled her work area. The purification seals she had paid a mage good money for were pulling double time to keep the air she was breathing safe. Minutes passed, and as the final concoctions cooled she placed a handwritten label on each. The labels denoted her best guess as to what each potion should affect.
Looking at the vials before her, Lucinda realized they needed to be tested. But if she tested them on random people, willing or not, the damage to her reputation could be devastating. That really only left one sage test subject, herself. She eyed the potions warily, this was the most dangerous part of alchemy and everyone with a smidge of talent knew it.
