Chapter #3

Samson and his speed

    by: DevilsBargin Author IconMail Icon
The old Tauros plodded slowly through the Marrone Berry Fields.

Hurst's Son Rock Marrone sat on the bench of the wagon. Holding the reins with a loose grip. Annoyedly Rock asked. The big creature to whom those reins were attached. Named Samson.

Would it be possible to make this wagon. Go any faster?

Samson just ignored the child holding the reins behind him. The same way he ignored the boy. When it came time to plow the field. Or dislodged a large rock from the ground. For the large four legged beast had no intention of going any faster than his current pace. Not for the child of his trainer or for anyone else. It was a rule with Samson to always meander slowly. A rule given to him by Hurst. The only person capable of making Samson move any faster than this.

For you see dear gentle reader.

In the earliest days when Samson and Hurst had just begun traveling together. Hurst and Samson had made a careless mistake. A mistake, which had cost them. And what It had cost them. Had been Prize Money. Prize Money from a tournament Hurst had entered them into. And while Prized Money itself held no meaning to the large animal. Currently pulling the wagon. The lost oppurtunity had meant the world to His Trainer. For in this point in Hurst career. Hurst had still been a young Trainer. A Trainer. Who had been shattering records along with opponents. In much the same way that a Gengar is capable of phasing through solid materials. In other words Hurst and his team had been on a tear through the Obsidian Region. Taking the Professional Circut and the Obsidian Gym Leaders by storm. In just the span of two and a half months Team Marrone had won a tryfectia of Tournaments in three separate cities. Their frist victory had came in the bustling town of Madison. As far as tournaments went. There hadn't been much to this one. Around Two Hundred and Forty Trainers had gathered in The town of Madison. Each trainer had paid a sum of a Hundred in Obsidian Coins to enter their team into the Madison Square Tournament. Forty of those Coins from each participant. Was then sat aside to be given to the Winner of the tournament. While a smaller sum of Twenty was set aside to be devided up by the next Nine places, and the remaining Forty was donated to the Madison Square Pokecenter as a thank you for providing adequate health care to trainers in need. The tournament while containing a simple layout. Had been grueling. Twelve days of battle with each team being required to battle three times a day. On the last day only trainers with either semi perfect one loss records or perfect no loss records were allowed to continue. Hurst and his team had been among the latter. Winning that tournament had really opened up a few eyes among and around the professional circut. Yet more than that. Being the Victor's had given them a whole new realm of possibilities. Those possibilities came in the form of perks. The Nine Thousand Six Hundred Coin purse was much needed for them. Yet the real prize for Hurst had been in placing in the top fifty competitors. Placing so high had allowed the fifty top trainers to get their hands on A Private Challenge Pokeball.

For those of the uninitiated. A Challenge Pokeball is a different kind of Pokeball than what most people are use to. Its an incredibly hard pokeball for a wild pokemon to break out of. With an insanely high capture rate. Which makes having this kind of Pokeball a tantalizing option for any trainer. On the off chance a challange ball is broken by a wild pokemon then a trainer must gather up the broken remains of the challenge ball and show the evidence the the Local Gym Coridinator of which the ball was issued. In order to obtain a new Challenge Ball. The down side to owning a challenge ball is this. In order for a trainer to challenge the the issuing Gym. The Challenge Ball has to be filled with a Pokemon. When said Trainer goes to Challenge the issuing Gym Leader. The pokemon inside the challenge ball. Then has to be used in the battle against said Gym leader. Making at least one appearance in the battle. Or any proceeding victory against the Gym or its leader does not count towards badge and prizes. If the trainer loses to the Gym Leader. The challenge ball is resended and the Trainer is required to give up their challenge ball and the pokemon inside to the Gym. The Gym leader will then either add the pokemon to their own team, donate it to a professor to give to a local youth coming of age to own a pokemon or reserve the right issue the pokemon to a subordinate in the Gym's hirachery. Normally the latter is the case. Resulting in the next time a trainer earns another challenge ball. That they will most likely see their previous pokemon much stronger than before and used against them at some point in the their quest to concur the Gym. Giving each trainer a much harder Gym to defeat than the frist time they entered. Hurst had been smart with his challenge ball. He had found the strongest pokemon he could and began training it at a feverish pace. By the time Hurst issued his challenge only five of the fifty issued combatants had attempted to concur the Gym which meant those guarding the Gym had less poweful pokemon to battle with. Than they would if Hurst had bided his Time. The strategy paid off. Team Marrone dispatched their frist gym leader and his subordinates quite handily. And acquired a powerful multi use Technical Machine for his efforts. And team Marrone's frist gym badge. Plus the added benefit of being allowed to keep the pokemon inside the challenge ball. That pokemon had become a powerful new member to Team Marrone. The next Tournament had come in the town of Fenway this one had been more organized than the previous tournament all battles had been housed inside the legendary Gym of the Green Path. Thousands of screaming fanatical fans had gathered to watch the yearly festivities. Samson remembered being put into battle against his frist opponent. He remembered the thrill and exhilaration he felt of being put infront of a crowd. He remembered snorting loudly. His giant hooves digging into the rich earthen soil. The crowd chanting his name as it flashed across the televised big board. Samson also remembered the lingering fear that settled into the pit of his stomach as he waited for a mixture of actions to occur. He waited patiently for his opponents pokemon to appear. He longed for Hurst vocal commands to attack, or doge, and above all else he looked forward to having his performance judged by the world. The battle had been short and firce. Neither trainer wishing to overextend their pokemon. In case they got into the later rounds. The top Fourty had been declared the Victor's each Trainer had then been issued a piece of the prize pool and the coveted Challange Ball. Two professors had been in attendance taking notes and giving hints to the trainers on move types for each pokemon they used in competition. The third tournament had taught Samson and Hurst their lesson. It had been in the semi final round of the Gladiatorial Games held in the Arena at the town of Oum. Hurst had drawn his opponent an old man he'd seen once before. Sitting alone in a field amonth prior. The man had seemed friendly enough. He didn't say much just sat on that log and looked across the valley. To where Hurst was camped. Hurst had let Samson and the others out of their Pokeballs to stretch their legs and get some exercise. Samson being jolly in nature started a race against one of his partners. The two had shown out putting on quite a display of speed and maneuverability. Samson had seen the Elderly Gentleman sitting alone and watching them. Samson hadn't thought much about it at the time. To him it had just been a person watching their antics. To the Old Man it had been an opportunity to study a potential enemy. An opportunity which paid off when the two found themselves facing off in the Arena all of Hurst tricks seemed to fail the old man had been perpared for the speed of ever member of Hurst team except for Vase. Vase had never left Hurst side. Vase had just curled up next to the fire and watched Hurst. Samson and the rest of the team had been had been throughly thrashed and Vase Ran out of steam at the six pokemon. Hurst had finished one place outside the money.

Hurst had briefly spoken with the old man. He had asked. Him one important question how'd you know? I neve used two of those moves in any previous round.and their not learned naturally. So how?

The old man's answer had been simple. You showed me. Or your pokemon did when they were playing in that field around a month ago. Your young so you didn't know. So let me tell you. You should always be aware of who's watching and only show your strength when theirs something to be gained. Hurst had took that lesson to hart and since that day Samson had never flaunted his speed except to battle. The damage had been done though. Team Marrone coffers had run low. Hurst had missed meals to make sure they ate. A young disgraced trainer six commitments. And no roof over his head to call home. Hurst vowed he would never make the same mistake again.

The wagon rolled up to the field Hurst had sent Rock too. Rock launched another complaint. Took long enough. Rock wasted no time un-hitching the Tauros. Then sat about dragging the tools from the wagon they would need a fence Rock though Hurst would have to supply the lumbered the terrain was different from anything on the Marrone land Boulders were strewn everywhere, the ground was hard and few plants were growing in between them. Rock Marrone sat to work piling stone into the wagon. He and Samson would have to drag it off somewhere. Rock worked hard until the sun was directly overhead and then stopped for lunch when he heard a voice
