Tuesday night. The teens informed their families of what they would be doing. In each case the parents expressed varying degrees of discomfort but overall they tried to keep an open mind. Getting an email from Principal Greene praising the kids for their willingness to participate in this empathy exercise probably helped also. The parents probably hoped that after a few days the girls would find football exhausting and admit they were wrong.
The boys did have to spend a very long time in the bathroom removing the hair from most of their body. Chris later found the sensation of his hairless legs rubbing against his bedsheets to be an unexpected pleasurable feeling.

Rebekah and John were discussing the day’s events over dinner in the apartment they shared. “I tell you honey, give the girls a fair chance. You might be surprised.” John assured her he would. His thoughts drifted as he considered what position would be best for each girl to try.

Wednesday after school. The teens arrived at the gym. The coaches had decided that they would use a spare locker room to change clothes so as not to be distracted by their own teammates. This room wasn’t very large but it had several rows of lockers that would allow each trio a degree of privacy while changing. Chris and Julia exchanged duffel bags containing their practice gear. Tammy and Simon paired up since they were both barely above 5 feet in height and Jake and Jessica matched since both were about 5’10’’. The girls and boys retreated to opposite corners of the room.
Coach Bosley looked on as the boys opened the girls duffel bags and pulled out a Gray t-shirt with the school name in Green on the front, black shorts, white ankle socks and sneakers. Seeing their confusion, she chimed in “You didn’t think you would be practicing in the official skirt and shell top did you?” Clearly the boys had.
“The Green briefs you see in the bag are your underwear. In case your wondering why they are designed like that, a cheerleader wears them to prevent flashing the crowd during jumps and tumbling” she said with a mischievous grin. On that note she left the boys to finish dressing.
Chris held the briefs up for a closer look. In a way they resembled regular women’s underwear but were very stretchable.
‘I always wanted to get into Julia’s panties, just never thought it would happen like this’ he grumbled.
One thing the boys did not anticipate was that the sports bras had a little padding in the cups. Add in smaller sized t-shirts than they would normally wear, it helped to create an illusion that each boy had a small pair of breasts. In reality most of the clothes weren’t that much different than some of their own workout clothes. Each boy had to adjust the lacings a little of the plain white sneakers to accommodate their feet but each was able to put them on with only mild discomfort. They looked at each uncomfortably as they began to take on an androgynous appearance.
Meanwhile the girls were looking through the large duffel bags trying to make sense of all the pads and clothing. Coach Forsythe had given them a quick overview of what they would wear and left them to get dressed. Julia held in front of her a beige colored item that was Chris’s athletic supporter. Noticing that Tammy and Jessica seemed reluctant to put their supporters on, she took the lead and stepped into the garment and pulled it up to her waist. She looked at her friends with a grin and gave the plastic protective cup in the supporter a quick rap “Just like the boys!”
Next she held up something resembling bulky white pants. The Coach had called it a 7 pad girdle. The girls had seen football players with their bulky padding before but now it was startling to see it up close.
“That’s a lot of padding” Tammy said with a gulp. The three girls slipped their legs into their girdles and followed that with a well worn grass-stained pair of white practice pants.
The girls were still getting dressed when they heard Chris announce over the lockers “Getting ready for cheerleader practice is so much easier. Have fun out there” he said with a hint of mockery.
Each girl then put on a t-shirt, socks and the athletic shoes with the plastic cleats on the sole. That left just the shoulder pads. Julia again took the lead and pulled the bulky pads over her head.
“You look like an extra in a Mad Max film” teased Jessica. The girls shared a laugh before finishing by pulling on a dirty practice jersey over the shoulder pads and then the helmets
Julia smiled at her friends “Let’s show them what we can do!”
The three girls confidently trotted out to field where they found most of the team doing some stretching. The sun blazed down as the afternoon promised to be warmer than normal.
Coach Forsythe walked up and blew his whistle “One lap everyone. Go!” The girls followed the team as they began to jog around an oval track that circled the field. The distance they covered was about 440 yards (400 m). Running with bulky pads took some getting used to but the girls were able to keep up with their teammates without to much effort.
The Coach ordered them all to do some more stretching. He noticed that the girls were extremely flexible, particularly Tammy who could almost do a 180 degree leg split. As he walked by he said “Some endurance exercises are next. Mimic what the rest of the team is doing. Just do your best“
He blew his whistle “Spread out. 20 Push-ups. Go!” The next 20 minutes was a series of various calisthenics that the girls were somewhat familiar with. They struggled a bit but for the most part were able to keep up.
The Coach alerted the girls “Agility training is next. You will see several groups doing a drill and they rotate to a new station when I blow the whistle. Take their lead” What followed was another 20 minutes of the trio doing various exercises that involved running side to side, sometimes backwards, and sometimes through patterns painted on the ground. Now the three girls were beginning to sweat.
Coach Forsythe blew his whistle again “Lines everybody. Let’s go”. The girls noticed some grumbling from the rest of the team as they followed them towards one end of the field. The Coach approached the girls “This drill is called Lines. Sometimes it’s also called Suicides. There is no time you have to meet. Again just do your best.”
The girls watched with some trepidation as a group of players lined up on the goal line. At the sound of the whistle they sprinted to the 10 yard line. Once a foot touched or crossed the line, the players spun in place and ran back to the goal line. There they touched that line and quickly spun again and ran to the 20 yard line. The process was repeated with each sprint getting 10 yards longer. Julia was beginning to wonder if the Coach expected them to do this for the entire 100 yards on the field. It turned out the touch at the 50 yard line was the final leg and once the players returned to the goal line they stopped. The girls couldn’t help but notice that each boy was bent over wheezing hard. Julia and her friends exchanged nervous looks.
The girls completed the Lines drill but each fell to their knees upon crossing the goal line as they tried desperately to catch their breath. They were able to take some small consolation that they weren’t the slowest on the team.

At the same time, Chris and the boys began cheerleading practice with a lengthy stretching program. It was apparent that they were not nearly as limber as the girls. Coach Bosley even remarked on that fact “I see in the news professional male athletes are injuring their groin or oblique muscles all the time. Maybe they should do a little less weight training and more stretching, eh boys?” Chris had to wonder if she had a point.
The Coach asked if they had any experience doing cartwheels, hand stands or round-offs. Each boy shook there head no.
She then explained that she would have the boys take the spots of the girls they replaced in some cheer drills. Chris held up his hand “You’re not going to make us run around the gym for awhile?” Less a question, more like a wisecrack.
Coach Bosley gave him a stern look. “No. We may work on some tumbling afterwards but I believe you will find this all far less exhausting than your football practice. Just a warning. We practice these drills so that maybe one day the team can participate in a competition. The judging is primarily focused on how well the cheerleaders move as a team. Each member needs to move completely in synch with each other. One misstep, a seconds delay in getting to your spot, or forgetting a move can kill a team’s chance at winning. How long does a typical football play last?”
Chris looked at his friends before answering “I’d guess 5 to 10 seconds”
“And for those few seconds you know basically where you are supposed to go, what you need to do?” The boys nodded in agreement.
“I’ve seen some Competition Cheers that are 6 minutes long with each member moving around the floor while still cheering as one unit. Let’s see how fast you three can learn to move as one unit with the rest of my squad.”
Chris’ confidence that this challenge was going to be an easy win began to ever so slightly shrink.
