Chapter #4Wait, There's More Simulation Options! by: Mr.Domino   "A-alright, I think we should try the...Wait" Eugene was about to make his selection with the machine buzzed softly and more choices began scrolling across the primitive screen in a very 'But wait, there's more!' feeling.
"What's up Geno?" Peter asked from the couch.
"It's, uh, giving us more options to choose from. Looks like there's an option for an 'outdoors' simulation or a 'music' simulation...And it looks like if I type the number 3 it'll list off even more stuff." Eugene neglected to mention the little voice in side his head telling him that maybe this 'U' person was still around, despite how old the game machine looked. Maybe there was some kind of wireless card inside? The game HAD said that it could be connected to a computer, maybe even the Internet in order to download new game types...But that notecard had been crisp and clearly new. It wasn't just a relic from the 80s or whenever, some programmer speaking to another in the days where instant communication was impossible.
He suddenly had a hard time remembering if he'd caught the girl's name that had been at the shop in the mall. Had it started with a 'U'? That didn't seem right...And Eugene kicked himself for being too enamored with the woman's good looks and charming personality as she had suckered him into buying the game...But the longer they messed with the machine, the more of a not-quite-right feeling was growing inside of Eugene.
"Ooooh" Lindsey cooed, her blue eyes lighting up at the new modes, "Music sounds REALLY fun! Maybe it's, like, karaoke or something! I totally did that at a Japanese bar when I went on my honors trip to Japan last year in high school. It was so much, like fun! And those Japanese guys get REALLY into it! But me an' Bethany TOTALLY won with our duet! I got a little trophy and everything up in my room!"
"You went to Japan? On an honors trip?" Peter said, coughing a bit as the sip from Judy's iced tea caught in his throat in surprise. This was quickly followed up by a soft elbow to the side from Judy, who was giving him a look. "I mean, uh, that just sounds really, uh, expensive! Yeah, expensive"
Lindsey didn't seem to mind, or perhaps notice, the gaff, "Yeah! Like Honors Club wanted to do something different than just flying to DC, right? So we convinced the teachers to, like, let us fly to Japan! 'Course we all had to get jobs on top of doing all the fundraising since yeah it was, like, SUPER pricey! But SO totally worth it! Tokyo was a blast! We should totally go before we graduate! I know, like, all the best shops!"
The group was still blown away by the revelation, Peter especially. The learned jock had tried to steer away from 'labeling' others, given he worked hard to make people see him as something other than just a dumb jock on a scholarship run, but Lindsey either was putting on a enormous 'innocent dumb blonde' act or really was like the chick from the old Legally Blonde movie and just didn't realize how much like a bimbo she often sounded. Even if she did lack the normal 'bimbo curves' on her stickish frame.
"Music COULD be cool, I uh, usedtobeinachurchchoir" Judy mumbled, and regretted saying anything to try to cover up her boyfriend's error. She saw Lindsey and Eugene turn to stare at her while PEter looked up at the ceiling as innocently as he could.
"YOU went to church!? But like, all the gothy stuff!" Lindsey said, pointing at Judy's heeled boots, fishnet stockings, black and purple skirt and the one size too small t-shirt that had a heart shaped skull on it, Judy's purple hair and the heavy eyeliner and black lipstick that adorned her face.
"My, uh, parents made me do it." Judy said quietly as she tried to disappear into the couch next to Peter.
"But you're so gothy! You're like, the most gothy chick I know!" In reality Judy was the ONLY gothy chick Lindsey knew.
"So what was the outdoors one like, Geno?" Peter said, clearing his throat in an attempt to steer the conversation away from Judy's past, which he knew she hated talking about. He had been dating her for almost two years and he STILL barely knew anything about it and what he did know was only because of 'boyfriend confidentiality'. But he did know that it wasn't a happy place...And that Judy was a fantastic singer.
"Uh, well..." Eugene looked at the machine and the game box and then just shrugged, "I guess just something to do outside?"
"That actually sounds pretty nice. The air IS getting a little stuffy in here. I change my vote to Outdoors instead of music" Judy said, running some fingers along the back of Peter's head in appreciation for the topic change. Despite the fact he could sometimes be a bit of a whiny accidental jerk, she was glad that he had a good heart and had looked out for her. MAybe later she could show him just how much she appreciated him, after they got done playing with 'the kids'...
"Aw! But..." Lindsey pouted, burrowing into her bean-bag in disappointment.
"Guys I...I'm not sure if" Eugene couldn't put off the creepy feeling he was getting from the dome-like machine buzzing on the table in front of them.
"Too slow, Genie!" Lindsey suddenly chirpped, pulling herself out of the beanbag and sliding the game's keyboard away from the startled geek. She stuck her tongue out playfully and typed in...  | Members who added to this interactive story also contributed to these: |
