Chapter #3

A Little Piece of the Orient

“Huh? What’s that?” You asked no one in particular.

You had seen something out of the corner of your eye as you got up from your impromptu meeting with your floor, a tiny, brightly colored item carefully tucked in between your mattress and box spring.

You reached out and gave the item a little tug. It slid free quite easily and you could only stare at it in wonder.

The item that you had found was something you recognized. It looked, if you could remember correctly, like an Omamori. A charm or talisman sold by Shinto temples in Japan as a token of good luck or to represent a particular blessing from the gods.

Turning it over in your hand, you were struck by how beautiful a piece it was. The wooden talisman was sheathed in a vivid purple brocade bag covered in intricate silver and gold embroidery that resembled gusts of wind and the leaves they carried with them. A line of Japanese kanji that you couldn’t read ran down the center, skillfully embroidered with the same shining golden thread. The bag was sealed with a white corded tassel tied in a particular double looped knot (https://www.omamori.com/322-large_defaul...).

“Wow.”

Yes, indeed. The charm was a thing of beauty and you could tell just by looking at it that someone put a large amount of time and skill into it.

That being said, where did it come from?

As much respect and interest that you had for Japanese culture, you were sure you hadn’t bought this. You would have definitely remembered receiving this.

If you were honest, it weirded you out a bit. It was a harmless trinket but having it suddenly appear under your mattress was odd to you. You were obviously going to keep it and treasure it but you definitely wanted to know where it came from.

The only person that might’ve put it there would’ve been your mom when she changed your sheets, but the only things she knew about Japan came from the stories your grandfather shared from his service in the pacific during world war 2.

So then, how did it get here and who left it? It sure as hell wasn't you and it was unlikely to have been your mom.
