Chapter #3

An opportunity of a lifetime!

Journalism wasn't one of Matt's strong suits but as far as electives went, he was more than happy to take it up for an easy credit towards graduating. It was to his confusion however that the teacher in charge of running the newspaper let most of the students run amok. He didn't imagine what a school newspaper was supposed to look like but he could surmise it didn't involve gossip pages or factoids that one could easily pull from the internet. If he was going to be in this class he might as well have gotten well acquainted with what it took to be a journalist.

So he set to work, and immediately ran into the first roadblock of his budding career: finding something newsworthy to write about.

The question followed him all the way home, where he laid in bed thinking about what he could cover. It was by chance he decided to toil away on his phone as the first image to pop up was the infamous man himself Hiram Lodge who had succeeded in becoming mayor of Riverdale not too long ago.

The article in question read off as a scathing review of Hiram's practices and Matt felt a rush of inspiration in that moment. His plan would have to wait until morning which by then Matt couldn't stand to stay asleep for long. At first opportunity the boy picked up the phone and rang up the number associated with the mayor's office. The first person to respond was a secretary who didn't bother with the pleasantries. The boy almost balked at the way she spoke, a quickened "Hiram Lodge isn't seeing anyone at the moment." that made him almost want to hang up before she could. He didn't know what possessed him during that however, because no sooner when she was finished did he finally speak up. "I wanted to actually host an interview! A... uh, fluff piece?" Matt's lips quivered as soon as he said that and felt the knots in his stomach grow as he stood there waiting a response.

"One moment." The secretary said before Matt was put on hold and left to think over his decisions. A fluff piece? What was he thinking?! Of all the men to write about in a positive manner Hiram was well below that list and then some. Before he could dwell on it any further Matt heard the sound of the secretary's voice once more.

"We can schedule you for later on this afternoon." She said and Matt felt his heart soar at the opportunity he was given. "O-of course!" He said, even as the hour listed was during school hours but as far as he was aware? School was beyond him in the moment of getting to meet THE Hiram Lodge.

The conversation ended with a click of the phone and Matt was already abuzz with what he should wear during such an occasion.

By the time the hour of his appointment rolled around Matt was looking in the mirror, having done away with the idea of dressing professionally and simply rehearsing how he'd introduce himself to Hiram Lodge. Every fiber of his being shook from nervousness but he couldn't turn back now and what kept him going was thinking about what everyone would say once he managed to get a story out featuring the mayor himself.

It pained him to ignore going to school that day as he was pretty sure someone would've stopped him on his way to city hall seeing as how both his parents were usually off to work their respective jobs early in the morning, one of the luxuries that he could not take for granted at this moment.

He met eyes with the secretary who glanced him over before narrowing her eyes. "Shouldn't you be in school?" She asked just for Matt to swallow thickly before saying "I was given permission to be here." and finding himself being stared down a little longer before a simple shrug of the woman's shoulders set his mind at ease. Suddenly she reached over to press a button on her desk. "Mister Lodge? Your afternoon appointment is here." She spoke and Matt could hear the rich voice of an older man chime through a speaker "Perfect. Send them in."

A nod from the secretary later and Matt found himself walking for what felt like an eternity. Doubts began to creep in and yet when his hand reached for the doorknob he knew he was past the point of no return. Immediately the scent of cologne hit the boy's senses as he stepped into an office space.

"Ah, good to see you." Came a voice that practically demanded Matt's attention. He turned his head a little to the left, past all the portraits and knick-knacks that lined shelves within the office just to see a pair of well polished dress shoes resting upon a wooden desk's lacquered surface.

Matt didn't know what to say, his eyes were inexplicably drawn to the broad set of soles right before him, his mouth was dry and he didn't know what to do but silently savor the sight before him. The sound of a throat clearing quickly put an end to that act as Matt looked up to see the chiseled features of Hiram Lodge looking less than pleased. "You're here for.. a fluff piece?" Hiram said and instantly brought Matt back into reality as the boy stutter almost immediately. "Y-yes sir it's nice to fee- to meet you!" Matt said and noticed the way Hiram's eyes narrowed. "Fine." Hiram said "I'm more than happy to give audience to someone so... eager to see the good that I do." a smile crept on the older man's face for only just a moment before he looked in the direction of the chair. "Sit down." Hiram spoke in a way that felt more like an order than a suggestion and Matt was in no mind to protest.

The boy sat down, his eyes fixated on those big shoes and that continued to lord their presence over him so confidently as Hiram stared the boy down. "I have a question." Hiram soon asked-
