Dean sighed and put his head down. He was devastated. All of his hard work with the client was for nothing. He caught his bosses eye who gave a disapproving look. The prospective clients shook hands and left the building. Dean’s boss, Erica, asked him to stay behind for a minute.
“Are you sure you’re up to this, Dean?” she asked with concern. “Since you’ve started in this role you’ve not exactly been hitting it out of the park.”
“I am,” he replied confidently. The look in his eye was not conveying that though. He caught a glimpse of Travis who was very closely watching the meeting from a distance.
“I’m sorry, it’s just been difficult transitioning. I’ll get the hang of it, I promise,” he continued. Dean had only started this role of bringing in potential clients for new business recently. It was clear it had been hard for him, given his lack of sleep, exercise and good habits. Even his boss couldn’t help but notice he’d put on about ten pounds, not exactly filling her with confidence about Dean’s ability to handle the excess stress.
“I’m going to have Travis handle new accounts for a while. Prove to me you can get back on top of your game and I’ll give you another shot,” she said after some consideration.
Dean nodded his head. He was not pleased. While this would give him more time to focus on himself, he liked the promotion obviously for the money and the trust that was put in him. He wanted his boss to be impressed. And worse of all, he knew how smug Travis would be to hear that Dean struck out and that he’d be solely in charge of accounts for a while. Dean went back to his desk, mumbling under his breath.
He watched as Travis was called into the conference room and was told he’d be in charge of clients for the time being. When he left, he could see the giant smile on Travis face. It angered Dean immensely.
“Guess you couldn’t handle it in the big leagues, eh Dean?” Travis said walking over with a doughnut in hand. He chewed it in a way that annoyed Dean, though everything Travis did rubbed Dean the wrong way. He just looked at his computer screen and ignored Travis. “Maybe if I’m generous I’ll take you out to lunch one of these days. If I have the time between meeting clients, that is.”
Travis walked off, and eventually was whisked off to some client meetings. Dean had no choice but to keep his head down and do his work. He wanted another shot and to show Erica that he was better than Travis.
