Shantae drank some of the water before she answered, “Well I’m traveling because I need to collect elemental stones and get back the Steam engine from Risky Boots."
Something about that sounded familiar. You asked, “So… Other than becoming your item caddy, how can I help you?”
“Item Caddy?” Shantae asked, looking confused.
“I carry items and money for you, thus letting you have a bit more leeway with stuff,” You explained.
“Oh! I get it! That means I’d be able to bring more than nine healing items and more than 999 gems, thanks to you! You’re hired!” Shantae cheerfully said. You nodded. “So that means I can grind some more later and give you the surplus. That’ll help me with trying to get the Golem Stone from the Golem Mine in the Men’s Desert.”
“Men’s Desert?” You asked.
“The Scorpion people segregate themselves for some reason. Outsiders aren’t allowed to know. Go figure,” Shantae replied with a shrug. “So let’s go to Oasis Town and talk with Sky. She’s a friend who is also a Warbird Trainer. It runs on her mother’s side of the family.”
“Okay, so where’s Oasis Town?” You asked.
“There,” Shantae answered, pointing in a direction. “Hey, I can transform into a Monkey. Do you mind if I change and take a nap on top of your backpack?”
“Go ahead?” You answered, not sure if you heard right?
“Thanks! Wake me up when we're near the gate or if you get attacked by monsters,” Shantae replied before she did a rather attention-grabbing Belly Dance. After a smoke cloud hid her, there was a small purple-furred Monkey in her place. She quickly scampered up you and laid on top of your backpack. It wasn’t long before you heard the mumbling of sleep from her.
You couldn’t help but smile a little. After some time, maybe an hour or two, you neared the stone gates of a town. You saw the sign above the gate, which read, ‘Oasis Town’.
“Hey, Shantae. Wake up,” You said, shaking your backpack a little.
“Five more minutes,” She sleepily cooed.
“Didn’t you want to know when we got near Oasis Town?” You asked.
She cutely yawned before leaping off you back. After a smoke cloud, she was back to normal, if still a little bit sleepy. “Well, Sky will be happy to see me. I’ll introduce the two of you.”
You followed her into the town. It was quite lively and you suspected that Great-Grandpa Walter would love it, based on his journal entries.
You followed her into one of the buildings. Inside was a hatchery.
“Hey, Sky!” Shantae said to the woman inside.
The woman wore a blue headwrap that bound her blonde hair. She wore a purple hood over the headwrap. She also wore a blue tubetop with pink lining at the top, a pink bikini bottom barely covered by a blue-and-purple sarong. Sky said, “Hey, Shantae. Whose that with you?”
“His name is (NAME). I hired him as my Item Caddy guy!” Shantae replied.
“Well, he can’t be worse than Bolo,” Sky muttered as she studied you. “I commend you for carrying so much, but what’s she paying you?”
“We never agreed, so I guess free?” You answered, making Sky laugh.
“You go, girl!” Sky said to Shantae, giving her a thumbs-up.
Shantae looked confused as she said, “Uh, thanks? But we came here to get help opening the Golem Mines to get the Golem Stone.”
Sky looked at you and asked, “How good can you fight?”
“Against the monsters wandering about? I can do alright,” You answered.
“And the big boss monsters?” Sky asked, sounding serious.
“I guess let Shantae handle them and I stay out of her way, handing her items if she wants them?” You answered.
“Good answer. Let’s see that backpack,” Sky replied. After she checked, She said, “You’re missing magic potions and health potions. Other than that, you're good for a few days of travelling.”
“I can buy some more,” Shantae replied as she put the potions in your backpack. “I’ll be back soon!”
After Shantae left, you were alone with Sky and her many birds. You grew a bit worried, as they probably all were Warbirds.
