Chapter #3The Next Big Thing in Communication by: adianjayz In a distant land far from Rotherham,
Supervisor: "So, do we have any ideas on how to celebrate one billion users of our company's messaging app, 'Whosapp'? Something that will bring our user community closer together?"
Employee 1: "Oh oh! How about we design a feature that will allow users to send their facial expressions through the messaging app?"
Supervisor: "Yeah... those are called ourmojis, and they already exist in rival messaging apps."
Employee 2: "How about we incorporate voice messages in our app? That will certainly add another dimension to our app."
Supervisor: "Getting there... But we need something more radical. We want to proclaim this new feature 'The Next Big Thing' in the world of messaging."
Meanwhile, John sits quietly in the corner of the conference room, thinking hard about something.
Supervisor: "So John, what are you thinking over there?"
John: "Well... I was thinking about recent advances in technology, and it seems that augmented reality and virtual reality seem to be developing. Perhaps we could incorporate one of those in our app in some sort of way. That could give our app a feature beyond just typing and sending messages. A feature that will bring our community closer than words."
Supervisor: "...This idea is interesting. Unpolished, but radical. I like it! Everyone, I have decided to follow John's idea to develop this next big feature for our very successful app. I expect everyone to work full time on this before we hit the one billion user mark. No excuses."
Employee 2: "Aww.. come on. I promised a vacation and everything with my babe in two weeks."
Employee 1: *Puts up a sheet of paper depicting a sad face*
Some time after,
Supervisor: "John, how is the new feature coming along?"
John: "It's going great. I think we should make the deadline at this point. It might still be a prototype, but it should be usable."
Supervisor: "That sounds great! Care to summarize the progress so far?"
John: "So far in our feature which we now dub 'Soul Transmission', we have developed our app to send a user's soul into another person's body via NFC. Of course, interference with other electrical signals may be an issue, which could cause the soul to get diverted from the target body. But we have tuned the NFC signal to suffer from minimal interference through rigorous testing. The testing may not encompass all situations, however..."
Supervisor: "Oh, that's fine. As long as we minimize the risks on our part, we can send the app for beta testing. If issues arise, we can update the app with the latest version."
John: "That is a great idea. I will work on finalizing the beta version right away."
Supervisor: "Wait. Remind me again, why are using this soul transmission technique as our new feature? Need to report to my superiors."
John: "Oh, so going off of the idea of AR and VR, I thought that it would be better to cut down the augmented and virtual portions since they would require additional equipment that most people probably can't afford. Going straight to "the better reality" took some time, but we eventually devised a technique to convert one's soul/spirit into an NFC signal with our app on a smartphone. Right now, it is only a close range signal, and it can only be picked up by another smartphone with our app installed, but it allows the spirit to incorporate itself into the body of another user of the app."
Supervisor: "Right, so it is essentially like body possession. How does that improve the messaging experience?"
John: "It brings communication beyond word, voice, or even video chatting. A person can now physically communicate without being separated by smartphone screens. Of course, the signal is only NFC right now, so it isn't very useful, but we plan on developing a longer distance transmission to make this a more viable feature. Currently, we just need to know the safety and logistics of the transmission in general. Also, in some of our testing, we found that the transmitted soul can internally communicate with the host of his/her inhabited body, so that could bring a new layer of communication. At the very least, we can always update our feature with new and improved function as beta testing goes along."
Supervisor: "Awesome. Well, I have a meeting to attend, so I will catch you later!"
Some more time after,
Supervisor: "So, our one billionth user of our app is coming up soon. Is the feature ready for beta testing?"
John: "Yes, we will send this feature to that lucky user and offer it as an opportunity to beta test. Some risks, but it should still be an enjoyable experience, so it should be a reward of sorts for being our one billionth user."
Supervisor: "Awesome. Well I just got news that we just had our one billionth user! We should hurry up and send it!"
John: "Right on!"
Supervisor (thinking): "Hmmm.. Rotherham is where this feature will be sent to. Should be interesting to see how this develops."
Who will be the one-billionth user of "Whosapp"? indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
