No good Bernie

"... and so, Lady Rhea has issued an order for us to track down the cause of these missing items, and if possible, even find what has been taken and return it." Byleth explained.

The teacher of the Black Eagles house's classroom had just finished explaining to the students of said house that a series of missing item reports had been issued in increasing number as of late. Small things of no importance, ranging up to valuables and large amounts of food were being taken. This seemed to happen right under the victims' noses.

Nobody knew what was causing this, some suspected mice or other small creatures at first, but then more and more got taken, and it seemed the thieves moved up from just taking food to now stealing away jewelry and other valuables. The only thing the victims knew that when they want to bed at night their stuff was still there, but when they woke up, something was gone.

The cases had become serious enough to reach the attention of the archbishop in charge of the Church of Seiros and the Monastery as a whole, Lady Rhea. She had decided it was better to leave the investigation of the matter to the Officer's Academy, namely, the Black Eagles.

"I see... is this really a serious enough issue for us to get involved?" Edelgard, the house leader and future emperor of Adrestia, asked, brushing back her long, white hair.

"Yeah! Our missions are usually more like getting out on the battlefield and then, WAM! And BAM! We fight, and we win!" Caspar, the ever energetic youth, added most enthusiastically while giving a one-two punch to the air.

"Hmph. It seems more like a waste of time..." Hubert, Edelgard's most loyal and trusted retainer, scoffed, folding his arms. "However, perhaps this could be a good time to test some, unique, traps of mine..."

"Hold on!" Ferdinand, heir to house Von Aegir, intervened. He stood up and shushed the rest of his fellow classmates. "If Edelgard is not willing to help those in need, like these poor victims of thievery... then how can she be fit to lead us? I say we all join in the hunt for whoever is stealing these precious items!"

"Well, I don't think we should really be following orders from this bumblebee over here.." Dorothea, former songstress-turned-student, snickered, referring to Ferdinand.

"Hey!" Ferdinand yelled in annoyance. Dorothea ignored him, though.

"We should take the time to look for what's gone missing, even if we can't find whoever took it." She finished.

"I am in agreement. I would not be liking it if my belongings were to be, er, disappearing!" Petra, foreign exchange student from Brigid with a 'looser' grasp on the language of her new home, chimed in.

"Could you all stop arguing? I'm trying to nap here.." Linhardt, the laziest of students, yawned. "Wake me up when you reach a decision.."

Suddenly, a loud, ear-ringing noise filled the classroom. All of the highly opinionated students covered their ears. The source of the sound was the teacher, Byleth, who had used the old nails on the chalkboard technique to settle everyone down. It was not a move Byleth liked to use often, but in this case, it seemed quite necessary. Byleth was glad that Manuela had passed down the move.

"Alright, I think everyone's had enough time to chime in on their opinions." Byleth took a commanding tone. Every single one of the rowdy students became silent, looking to their professor and awaiting to hear what the decision would be.

"As I said before, this mission came straight from Lady Rhea. That means it is of the utmost importance! We will do as she asks, and begin our investigation shortly." Byleth said in a monotone, but powerful way. "Now, let's start by dividing up into teams and choosing where to look..."

As the students were divvied up into teams, discussions began amongst them. Each of the colorful characters proposing various ideas, such as what could be taking things, how they could catch whatever it was in traps. Not everyone was entirely on board, though. Some others still wanted nothing to do with it, thinking this a waste of time and would rather go back to their room and sleep.

Meanwhile, in the back of the classroom, hidden in the shadows of a dark corner, sat a timid young woman. She was Bernadetta, a purple-haired girl struck with a serious case of anxiety. Right now, she was sitting down on the floor, crouched down with a book over her head, trying her best to stay hidden from the rest of the class.

Bernadetta had been all but forgotten by the others during their discussions, or maybe it was because nobody really expected anything from her that she was left out of the talks. It might have seemed a bit cruel to others, but to Bernadetta, it was exactly how she liked things. To be left alone.

Oh, no... W-We have to go outside and look for something? Bernadetta thought, filled with the fear of the unknown.

She'd been living at the monastery for quite some time now, but still, just the idea of having to basically explore around it for some small, little creatures was sending chills up her spine. Not to mention the worst aspect, having to potentially talk to people for eyewitness accounts.

Nuh-uh! No way! That's too much to ask someone like me! Bernadetta shut her eyes and shook her head, hoping beyond hope that she'd somehow miraculously be chosen as an exception to joining the hunt for whatever it was that was taking all that stuff.

As Bernadetta let her thoughts stew and her emotions get the better of her, the rest of the class had finished talking and were already gone. The poor girl frightened by most everything didn't even notice until much later when she finally opened her eyes again, only to be met with an empty room. Not even Byleth was there.

"..."

Bernadetta felt bad from being abandoned. She knew she let people down when she did this kind of thing, but it was impossible for her to be any other way. She sighed, and got up, standing on her shaky legs.

"You're no good, Bernie... E-Everyone's gone and now you're all alone..."

Bernadetta wiped a tear from her eye. She'd thought it was just an itch, but was surprised to find that she'd wept a single tear. She looked down, keeping her eyes locked to her feet as she kicked at the floor.

"G-Guess its back to my room..." Bernadetta said, resigned to her fate of being forever alone, she was becoming more depressed. If a stormcloud could've appeared over her head right now, it would've. She was sinking into a despair of her own unfortunate making.

Bernadetta was distracted as she left her classroom. So much so that she didn't notice her teacher, Byleth, step right in front of her at the doorway. She walked right into her professor, causing her to squeak out in fright and fall backwards onto floor.

"Uuugghh..." Bernadetta groaned, rubbing her aching behind.

"Bernadetta." Byleth spoke.

"Omigoshimsosorrypleasedonthateme!" Bernadetta rambled, crawling backwards.

"Bernadetta." Byleth repeated. This time the words reached the scared girl, and she stopped long enough to look up and recognize her teacher.

"Oh, professor!" Bernadetta smiled at the familiar and welcome face. The purple-haired girl wasn't outgoing with most people, but with her beloved professor, it was different. Something about the green-haired teacher made Bernadetta feel safe enough to at least speak her mind. Although she was still wary.

"I thought you might try to sneak back to your room." Byleth told the fallen young woman, then sighed. Sensing her professor's disappointment, Bernadetta tried to come up with an excuse.

"O-Oh, no, no, no! I was just... um, trying to find out where everyone went. Y-You all left so fast, you know.." Bernadetta lied.

"Please, Bernie, I know what you were thinking. I told the others not to bother you, since I could see you were in a mood. I wanted to catch you personally before you made it back to your room." Byleth explained.

"Please, professor, d-don't make me do this!" Bernadetta cried, knowing full-well the jig was up. The poor girl grabbed onto Byleth's leg and pleaded.

"I've already paired you up with another student." Byleth told Bernadetta, bending down to her level. Gently, Byleth patted Bernadetta on her head. The whimpering girl looked up with big, puppy-dog eyes. Byleth merely smiled warmly in response.

"Now, come on, you don't want to keep your partner waiting, do you?" Byleth asked, offering a hand to the downtrodden young woman.

"N-No, I guess not..." Bernadetta mumbled under her breath. She took her professor's hand and got up, then added, "B-But if I end up dying, that's on you!"

"That's just a risk I'm willing to take." Byleth joked deadpan, then stepped aside and gave the purple-haired scaredey cat a gentle push. "Now, go on. I've got some paperwork to finish in here, I'll catch up with you later."

"O-Okay... h-here I go..." Bernadetta mustered up what little courage she could to walk through the doorway to the outside world. Thanks to Byleth's encouragement, she actually started to feel like she could do it. She could be outgoing for once and even help someone for the first time in forever. She was shaking a lot and her heartbeat had increased tenfold, but she thought that just maybe it wouldn't be so bad.

As soon as Bernadetta was outside of the classroom, and therefor out of her professor's line of sight, her thoughts changed. Byleth had told her where to go to meet up with her 'partner' in this investigation. However, Bernadetta also saw her room just down the way, and immediately wanted to retreat to it and forget the whole mission.

"Ooh, Bernie, you can't let everybody down all the time..!" Bernadetta talked to herself. Her fingers had started to twitch, and she was rubbing them together unconsciously. Then, her legs started to move almost on their own. She went to...
