Captain James pressed the call button on his console to try and reach engineering but was met with a shower of sparks and the console going dark.
"Jax! Get Janice up here now!" he barked at his security officer. Jax was already out the door headed to engineering.
However, the situation in engineering was a bit worse.
"What do you mean the AI stopped working?" Todd shouted as he put a fire out.
"It just stopped, the whole system's crashed!" Janice said standing from her smoking console.
"The engine's gone into over drive, the ship's practically driving herself blind!" Sam yelled also trying to put out a fire.
"Are proximity warnings still operable?" Todd asked trying to check a maintenance panel, but it was too hot to open.
"No, they're not." Jax said entering the room
"Jax?" the three engineers asked
"Yea, bridge is going crazy. Janice can you help?" he asked looking straight at her.
"Things are a bit haywire here!" Janice replied trying to rewire her console.
"We need to get the bridge back up, that's an order." Jax responded
"Alright alright, fine." Janice said setting the console panel down and going with Jax.
Once they reached the bridge again, Janice sat her wide hips in a seat and started working on a console. "Okay, I got the Comm system working again." Immediately several hails hit the bridge at the same time, being in credibly loud. The captain cancelled all of them and put out his own.
"All hands, the ship is critically malfunctioning. Give status reports in designated order." he took his hand off the comm and waited.
"Engineering is on fire and the engines are out of control."
"Medical is compromised, Life Support at full operation."
"Cargo is on fire, but currently undamaged."
"Can you tell why fire suppression isn't working?" James asked Janice
"No telling. A lot of this wiring is fried. Silver wire? Why!?" she replied without looking up. Another screen flicked on and the main display hologram flickered in the middle of the room.
"Aw hell." James and Jax said in almost unison as it showed a crash trajectory with a uncharted planet. James zoomed into the trajectory as the scanners flipped back on and showed it landing almost tangent with a ocean. The prediction was the ship would skip a couple times along the ocean and crash into the shore of a large continent.
"Should we launch escape pods?" Jax asked the Captain.
"Nah, we've got an almost perfect landing vector. This is the best crash landing we could hope for." he reached over for the comm, which sparked when he pressed it. "Crew, we're set to crash land on a unknown planet. We have an almost perfect landing vector. In about one hour we will skid across the planet's ocean and crash into the shore. I ask everyone to continue damage control and to go to emergency stations after."
"Good speech, captain."Jax said.
"Thanks."
"Okay, basic systems are online, but I can't reset the AI from here. Can I go back to engineering?" Janice asked, placing the console back in place as it's lights flickered back on
"Yes ma'am, thank you." James responded as his computer started reading out reports.
Janice jogged back to Engineering, properly winded by the time she got back. Most of the fires were put out, smoke billowed into the air intake to be filtered.
"How's it going" Janice asked breathlessly, resting against a wall.
"Most of the fires are out, but a lot of circuitry is burned out." Todd responded as Sam was working on replacing broken parts.
"How'd it go in tah bridge?" Sam asked.
"Oh, you know, a lot of basic programming stuff. This ship is crappily wired."
"What else is knew?"
"Yea yea" Janice replied as she set about fixing wires.
The crew was successful in minimizing damage from the fires and soon piled into their escape pod bays (which were the emergency stations). Soon after the ship rocked and rattled as loose objects were thrown about as the ship skipped once, twice, and the start gliding across the surface of the ocean. It rapidly slowed before finally beaching itself. The crew stayed in their stations for a bit, regaining their senses. In the bridge, the few working scanners were underway analyzing the atmosphere. It read that it was breathable. A party was sent out and they gathered some water and soil to analyze, which they found that the ocean water was equivalent to fresh water from Earth. The soil also was compatible with Earth crops.
"How is this not on the colony charts?" James asked himself as the crew all departed to the beach. "Engineering, report."
"It's bad, it took all out spare parts to stabilize the reactor. No telling how much work will need to be done to repair her fully." Todd reported.
"Well, with our cargo it shouldn't take too much work huh?" James said with a smile. Just then, there was a loud hiss and the primary engine blew out, sending shrapnel into the ocean behind it. The entire crew had gone prone to avoid anything, and everyone was safe. Todd quickly went to the Engineering deck and found that the whole room had been destroyed almost.
"Captain, even with the advanced machinery, we don't have the materials to rebuild an entire engine and reactor."
"Very well." James said despondently, "Use what power we have to try and print some seeds for food and then put out a distress call. I guess we can use the ship for shelter, and uh... uh, just see how it goes."
"Aye, Captain"
*****
Option 1:
There is something in the water, it only effects people with high estrogen (read females only) that makes them hungrier and slows their metabolism.
Option 2:
The food is just incredibly high calorie on this planet. The men find work or other things to burn it off, but the women? Not so much.
Option 3:
The crew finds essentially livestock that they can harvest, the milk from a few of them causes the women to start bulking up and producing their own milk (big milky boobs, basically)
