Bill had known the stone was special from the moment he saw it. He’d expected it to be a broken off piece of jewelry, or some undiscovered mineral that would make him famous. The last thing he expected was for it to start glowing in Gloria’s hand. Gloria herself didn’t seem to notice; instead, her attention was stuck on Tom.
“You’re such a self-absorbed asshole! I came here to forgive you, no apology necessary, and you try and turn it around on me! You’ve even got Bill on your side! Honestly, I thought he was smarter than that!”
“What the hell are you talking about!?” Tom shouted loud enough for the whole block to hear.
Bill shut his eyes and hoped he’d go deaf as the two teenagers competed in their shouting match. Their words jumbled together in his ears until they just became noise, noise that made Bill cringe and wince and shake his head.
“Hey,” he said softly, knowing he wouldn’t pierce their screams. Neither Tom nor Gloria turned away from the other. “Hey!” he repeated, louder this time.
The former couple their heads to look at Bill. “What!?” they shouted in unison.
“Could you please, maybe, possibly stop shouting just a little bit?”
The moment he stopped talking, Bill knew he’d made a mistake. Tom looked as though he’d insulted his mother, killed his cat, and punched him in the face all at once. Gloria, on the other hand, was wearing a manic grin.
“Are you taking her side?” Tom asked in disbelief.
“What? No, Tom, of course not! Where’d you even get that-”
Gloria stepped in front of Bill before he could finish his sentence. “Of course he’s taking my side! I’m right!”
Without missing a beat, Gloria spun around, grabbed Bill’s shoulder, and planted a spiteful kiss on his lips. She pulled her head away, but continued to hold him; it wouldn’t be that easy to escape.
“You’re such a good kisser, Bill,” Gloria lied. She looked behind her, directly into Tom’s moist eyes. “Really, I wish I’d dated you from the start!”
Then the stone in Gloria’s hand grew bright enough to blind the trio, and green light enveloped the world.
