Bill blinked a couple of times, shocked at the word mutant being expressed so... casually, as if he were stuck in an X-Men comic. Except, no, this was his reality now. He was an adult man in the future with a mutant daughter, married to his best friend. This was real.
Flashes of the past now briefly entered Bill's mind. Mysteriously, in the past couple of years, many young men and women in their 20s have been discovering that they have certain powers that would have been unbelievable even 10 years ago. Cable News these days was basically full of conspiracy theories about how these mutants came to be. Some speculate it was a failed nuclear experiment, others claim it was an intentional act of the American Government, hoping to create an army in case their treaties with Mars fall through... god, there was life on Mars? Other just exclaim it's the next step in human evolution. And some even claim that they have internal documents that it was a test using magical gemstones that caused these powers to appear. Bill would have normally brushed this off... and yet here he was.
Still, Bill saw how excited Willow... his daughter... was about all of this. And so he felt he should at least act the part of proud papa, at least until her could figure out a way to fix all this.
"That's amazing sweetie! I'm so happy you don't see this as a burden. If you don't mind me asking... what's your power?" Bill asked.
