You ride in the direction of the Red Keep. You have always wanted to see Maegor Targaryen's imposing castle up-close. Plus, there is a chance you might get to see the Queen. Even if you couldn't have an audience with her (which was highly unlikely), you might at least get a glimpse of her.
As you arrive on the grounds of the Red Keep, some stableboys come forward and offer to take charge of your horse for you. You appreciate the gesture, but you ask that they hold off for a moment. After all, you still have yet to find out if there is work here. If not, there would be no point in stabling Aerion.
You spot the captain of the guard in the courtyard, and you make your way over to him. You say courteously "Excuse me, milord. Where might I enlist in the guard force?"
The captain looks you over for a minute, and he tells you "You seem properly built and aptly skilled to make a fine guard, my boy. Alas, I must turn you away. We've already too many in our ranks."
"Too many guards?" you remark, astounded, "With respect, ser, how could one have too many guards? Especially Her Grace?"
"Strange as it may seem, it happens, lad," the captain claims, "You are far from the first I've had to turn away today. However, the Royal Army is always accepting new recruits. You might try your luck there."
"I thank you, ser, but I've no taste for that line of work," you inform him, "I've lasted this long on my own by staying off the front line."
"Some might call that a craven's tactic," the captain mutters, "But I would call it prudence. Keep thinking like that, lad, and you'll live a full life."
You scoff. "Indeed, ser."
You prepare to turn away, but just before you do, the captain of the guard steps in front of you and urges you "Just a moment. May I ask your age?"
"Six and ten," you answer him, "Why?"
He does not give a reply. Instead, he looks you over a second time, and then he thinks aloud "While there are no openings in the guard force, you may be well-suited for another position in the Red Keep."
"What sort of position?" you ask curiously.
"The Queen herself opened it up only recently," the captain explains, "It would involve a great deal of staying by her side."
"So, I would be her attendant?" you assume.
"Not quite," he cryptically responds. "Go inside and speak with Lord Qyburn. He will tell you more."
You smile appreciatively. "Thank you, milord."
You go back to the stable, climb off Aerion, and give him over to the care of the stableboys. You gather most of your supplies, including your sword, shield, and light armor. Then you enter the Red Keep.
What now?
