The shabby 1970's Mustang came to a jerking halt right next to the road, the hood bellowing smoke. Fury got out of the car and opened it, shielding his face when he was assaulted by a blast of scolding heat, and when the smoke had cleared, he took a look at the engine.
"Yup, it's a goner," the human-dragon hybrid said to himself, looking at the blackened and burned block of steel that was supposed to be an engine.
He sighed, closing the hood and patting it. "You served me well, my noble steed," Fury said.
Indeed it had served him very well. The old tin can had taken him hundreds of miles, across states, borders and countries. It had finally drove its last mile when it hit the desert, the scourging heat enough to fry an egg.
It was approaching dusk, though, the temperatures falling, which meant Fury didn't have to worry about dehydration. But he still had a long way to go before he reached his destination.
"Well, leit's get walking," he told himself, grabbing his backpack from the back of the car.
Maybe I should fly, he thought to himself. He had a pair of sturdy wings to do just that. But I need to conserve my energy, he thought, deciding against it, flying is exhausting.
But he was in luck. As he reached the top of a hill the road ran over, he could see the lights of what seemed like a motel.
Hmm, how convenient, he thought, just a mile from where I broke down....
XXXX
The motel was a place with greasy walls, wornout carpets and a very bored and old looking receptionist, who was slightly creepy and rude to Fury when he asked him for a room.
But at least the rooms were cheap, even though the were infested with bugs. Fury sat down on his bed and studied the map that he managed to obtain from the lobby room.
He managed to spot the motel he was staying in and calculate the distance he still had to travel.
Fifty miles, he concluded. Fifty miles to go until he reached his destination: Character Heaven!
It was the city where dreams came true, many said. Where nobodies like Fury became movie stars in less than two years. Fame and fortune awaited him, and that was exactly what the hybrid dreamed of when he went to sleep that clear night.
