The birds began to sing in the trees near the Wilko store and Claire really didn't feel like going in. 'Such a beautiful day.' She thought to herself. Indeed it was, the temperature barely reached up into the 80s and the humidity was rather low, mostly due to the passing of a cold front a few days earlier. All of these made for the beautiful day that the township of Rotherham had been enjoying. Claire reluctantly made her way across the street to the front of the store, but was a little too engrossed in her phone to see an older gentlemen coming out of the store at the same time. Ultimately the two collided, causing the both of them to tumble to the floor.
"You stupid girl!" The older man scolded as he looked around for his glasses that fell from his face when they collided. Claire looked over at the older man and noticed that he was rather unkept. His long white hair looked rather frayed and burned in places, his beard appeared to be patchy, and his clothes smelled of mothballs and of old smoke.
Not really liking being called a stupid girl, Claire swallowed her pride and quickly got up to help the older man return to his feet. This, however, proved to be fruitless. As she stood on her own feet, Claire heard a cracking sound and instantly knew something was wrong. "Uh oh." She sighed as she looked down to see the old man's glasses were now under her feet and in multiple pieces. "I'm so sorry." Claire replied as she bent down to recover the broken pieces, but was soon cut short by the older man.
"Every time I come to this store, something always goes wrong." He blustered as he got up and started to walk away, but seemed to stop as he thought of something. "Between the rude staff not wanting to help you, the male staff members trying to get into the pants of the ladies, and the little girls not looking where they are going, this store needs a look at a new perspective." That's when the proverbial light bulb went off above his head.
When the light of day begins to wane,
those employed will begin to obtain
the traits that others treasure most
will soon find another host.
Much to her disbelief, the bright and sunny day instantly turned stormy and the claps of thunder overhead frightened Claire a little. She looked back over to the older man and saw that he was gone. Looking all around, no sign of him remained at all and even the glasses that she stepped on were gone and looked like they were never there. "What in the world?" She said to herself as she shrugged her shoulders and begrudgingly went inside for her shift. As she entered, she felt a small shiver go down her spine. It was like her Grandmother told her. A rabbit must of gone over my grave.
"Hey, love." Elizabeth chimed in her normal cheerful manner.
"Hey Elizabeth." Claire responded back to her manager. "I have a question for you." Elizabeth stopped what she was doing and went over to the young lady. "Was there an old man in here about 5 to 10 minutes ago?"
Elizabeth stood there for a second trying to think back. "Come to think of it, there was an older man that came up to me saying that there wasn't anybody helping him find what he needed. He seemed a little out of it if you ask me. Why do you ask?"
"Oh, no reason." Claire announced as she waved her manager good bye.
