"You're late Jodie!" Emma gently berated her young, redheaded employee as she trudged in through the door one morning. Emma was a fair manager, but she was a stickler for tardiness. However she also knew of Jodie's situation, four months pregnant, the child's father had dumped her and she had been understandably going through a lot. A combination of morning sickness and depression had made for a bad time.
"I'm sorry, the bus was late." Jodie mumbled in response, glancing up at her manager.
Emma just smiled at her, then gestured for her to head upstairs. "Its okay, I know how unreliable the buses are, I used to have to rely on them before I moved and started catching a train to town. Run along and lock your belongings up and then you can report to Liz for your assignment." She told Jodie, letting her off easy.
Jodie feigned a smile at Emma and then headed through the door that led upstairs, rolling her eyes and grumbling to herself. But her look of annoyance quickly disappeared when she stopped on the stairs and reached into her pocket to retrieve the ring an old gypsy woman had given her for saving her dog from being hit by a car. She remembered vividly what the old woman had told her, that when worn, the ring enabled a person to swap people's body parts. Still somewhat skeptical, Jodie nonetheless slipped the ring on her left 2nd finger... and was amazed it was a perfect fit. Not only that, but a rush of knowledge flowed into her mind and made her dizzy for a second, she had to steady herself by grabbing the balustrade. Holy shit, its true!! Jodie thought, a massive grin forming on her face as she held her hand up and studied the ring.
"About time I had some good luck after all the shit I've been through." She then said, her voice echoing a little in the stairwell. She proceeded the rest of the way upstairs and entered the locker room to secure her bag and coat. She glanced at her watch, it was 9:15am, fifteen minutes after her shift was supposed to begin. She let out another sigh, but then went to have a pee in the ladies, which took another few minutes. By the time she got downstairs onto the shop floor and reported to Liz, she was 20 minutes later.
"Nice of you join the team Jodie." Liz sighed, glancing at her own watch.
"Sorry, shitty bus service!" Jodie responded, just wanting to get to her section already.
